Toray Plastics (America), Inc., Presents Solvent-Free Lidding Films

Technological advancement assures end users and consumers that there are no solvents in food application films; environmental benefits gained

North Kingstown, RI (December 17, 2007)-Solvent-free polyester lidding films that offer end users, converters, and consumers a variety of important benefits are available now from Toray Plastics (America), Inc. Environment-friendly, FDA-compliant heat-sealable LumiLid® lidding films for frozen and refrigerated foods applications are manufactured using Toray's proprietary extrusion coating technology, which does not require organic solvents. End users and consumers can be confident that no odorous or potentially harmful solvents from LumiLid films come into contact with food and are assured of a pure food flavor and aroma. Converters can grow business with film technology that is attractive to end users, and they will not have to perform solvent-retention measurement tests. In addition, LumiLid films' solvent-free manufacturing process, which eliminates dangerous volatile organic compounds, means that Toray does not engage in costly, time-consuming solvent management and recovery steps that waste energy.

"Solvents are unnecessary in the manufacture of state-of-the-art lidding films," states Mike Theriault, business manager, Toray Plastics (America), Inc. "We made a conscious decision at Toray to use advanced extrusion technology to create a lidding film that prevents solvent retention in food applications. LumiLid films offer the highest level of FDA-compliance and customers are assured that solvents are not contained in LumiLid films."

Transparent LumiLid films seal cleanly and securely, even on pleated corners, to APET, APET-coated board, CPET, PP, HDPE, and HIPS. They also resist shredding. Polyester LumiLid films can be used for microwaveable and dual-ovenable applications. Frozen meals and other frozen foods, refrigerated foods, dairy items, wet and dry foods, desserts, puddings, applesauce, and snacks, can be effectively and attractively packaged for consumer convenience with LumiLid lidding films.
