July 13, 2004 - Laser Film combines battery leakage protection with laser marking. Resistant to chemicals and mechanical abrasion, film can be applied to batteries in single, fully automated, in-line process step, with Nd YAG or CO2 laser marking performed at end of line. Customer-specific security features may be incorporated into film to ensure authenticity. Laser marking is scratch-resistant, assuring that data remains legible even when subjected to heavy wear.

Laser Film Replaces Plastic Housings for Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable batteries for cell phones, laptops, handhelds, PALMS or power tools are frequently encased in plastic housings to protect adjacent components from potential leakage of battery acid. These plastic housings are manufactured in a separate process, followed by manual insertion of the batteries. Finally, the housing is labelled either by application of a separate tag or by direct laser marking.

Schreiner ProTech has developed a combined solution for both, the leakage protection and marking requirement: a special laser film suitable for post-inscription capability. This special laser film is resistant against chemicals and mechanical abrasion. In addition, being smaller, lighter and more flexible than plastic housings, the laser film accommodates small assembly spaces, an increasingly important benefit in view of the unbroken trend towards further component miniaturization. Unlike plastic housings, the laser film can be applied to the batteries in a single, fully automated, high-speed in-line process step, with Nd YAG or CO2 laser marking performed at the end of the line. This eliminates the need for housing manufacture, manual work and additional tags, thus yielding major manufacturing process optimizations. Consequently, in addition to weight and space savings, cost benefits make laser film clearly superior to plastic housings.

To counteract the rising incidence of product piracy and gray market trading the combination of brand protection with product marking technology has become increasingly important. Working in conjunction with Schreiner ProSecure, the specialist for authenticity and value protection, Schreiner ProTech offers the incorporation of customer-specific security features into laser film, assuring that an authentic product can be clearly distinguished from a fake. The range of available brand protection reaches all the way up to the web-based KeySecure tracing system solution. This system involves every item being marked with a highly complex security code as a unique authentication feature, enabling product authenticity verification and tracing to be performed via the Internet at any stage of the distribution chain, up to and including the consumer.

Another benefit of laser film: The laser engraving process produces excellent marking results and optimum legibility, even of extremely small or complex characters or symbols, as well as offering the capability of incorporating customer-specific design features. Standard elements, such as logos or technical battery data, can be pre-marked to achieve further in-process time and cost savings.

The laser marking is scratch-resistant, assuring that data remains legible even when subjected to heavy wear. This guarantees the ability to trace products in case of customer complaints, for example. Additionally, high-grade marking quality and attractive design options enable manufacturers to effectively distinguish themselves from the competition.

One of the manufacturers who has come to value the advantages of this innovative solution is the battery supplier to one of the world’s leading cell [mobile] phone brands. In addition to the benefits already mentioned, this supplier was sold on the fact that high volumes of Schreiner ProTech’s laser film can be supplied to the production line even at short notice, thus providing the company with maximum manufacturing flexibility.
