Vicor Introduces the PFM(TM) Isolated AC-DC Converter with PFC Enabling the World's Lowest-profile Power Systems

Andover, MA...Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ: VICR) today introduced the PFM(TM) VI BRICK(TM) module, an isolated AC-DC converter with Power Factor Correction (PFC). With its Adaptive Cell(TM) architecture enabling consistently high efficiency over worldwide AC mains, the PFM VI BRICK delivers 330W at 48V (SELV) in a 9.5 mm-thin profile.

Unlike low frequency AC-DC front ends using a PFC boost stage and a DC-DC down converter, the PFM VI BRICK module provides isolation, voltage transformation and PFC regulation in a single stage using advanced, high-frequency soft switching technology. Its thin profile liberates system architects from dimensional constraints of bulky power supplies. Its small size, coupled with secondary-side energy storage at 48V, allows greater flexibility and creativity to design slim products with competitive advantages. Its modular, scalable power component functionality supports efficient, cost-effective power systems with 'N+1' redundancy.

This initial PFM module, in its thermally-adept, rugged form factor, complements a growing array of VI BRICK and V.I Chip(TM) converter building blocks that provide unparalleled density, efficiency and connectivity from the wall plug to the point of load. The PFM module is Vicor's new flagship for its vision of a far-reaching power component methodology. Across major electronic markets, requirements for power systems operating from AC- or DC-input voltages will be addressed more predictably and cost-effectively with modular components that support efficient power distribution and dense power conversion with the requisite flexibility and scalability.

"From the introduction of the first 'Brick' power modules in the '80s, Vicor has invested in the R&D necessary to architect game-changing innovation in power electronics," said Dr. Patrizio Vinciarelli, Vicor's Chairman of the Board and CEO. "The substantial investments made in V.I Chip technology and products are now beginning to pay off."

Vinciarelli continued, "This PFM VI BRICK module represents a first milestone for next generation AC-DC conversion. PFM VI BRICK and V.I Chip modules will supply the 48V 'hub' from which PRM(TM) regulators and VTM(TM) current multipliers can deliver superior end-to-end power system density, efficiency and flexibility."

Stephen Oliver, VP of V.I Chip Marketing and Sales commented, "V.I Chip and V.I Chip-inside VI BRICK modules are becoming the power behind the innovation of leading electronics OEMs. They enable end applications that achieve higher performance and energy efficiency while providing greater system flexibility and faster time to market."

The PFM module is now available in the thermally-adept, rugged VI BRICK package. For datasheets, technical documentation, and to order samples of the PF175B480C033FP-00 online, please visit www.vicorpower.com or contact Vicor Customer Service at 800-735-6200 or custserv@vicr.com.
