June 23, 2004 - Gigabit Interface Converters provide bi-directional data communication using Gigabit Ethernet/Fiber Channel across distances of 40 or 80 km. The 40 km module operates at 1,310 nm using 9-micron single-mode optical fiber, while 80 km device operates at 1,550 nm using single-mode fiber. Both utilize device inputs/outputs that are PECL-compatible and internally AC coupled. Hot-pluggable units are dual voltage compatible and operate at +3.3 or +5 V.

Stratos Lightwave Announces 40 and 80km GBICs For Long-Haul Communication Using Gigabit Ethernet

CHICAGO, IL--Stratos Lightwave LLC is announcing its new Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs) for long-haul communication over single-mode optical fiber. These GBICs provide bi-directional data communication using Gigabit Ethernet/Fibre Channel across distances of 40 or 80km (25 or 50 miles). Operating at 1.25/1.0625 Gbps, these new Stratos GBICs provide a low-cost solution for creating long-haul, high-speed connections. They are ideal for enterprise-wide and metro area networks where the price/performance profile of SONET is not an optimal fit. These hot-pluggable devices are compliant with all applicable industry standards and include Serial ID functionality.

The 40km module operates at 1310nm using 9-micron single mode optical fiber. The 80km device operates at 1550nm using single mode fiber. Both types utilize device inputs/outputs that are PECL-compatible and are internally AC coupled (150 ohms). The AC coupled I/Os allow close positioning of SERDES with respect to the GBIC, shorter line lengths and reduced EMI at Gigabit speeds. Both are dual voltage compatible, capable of operating at either +3.3V or +5V. Operating temperature range is from 0°C to +70°C for either version.

Stratos’ long-range GBICs are currently available in volume. Pricing is dependent on model ordered, quantity and options specified.
