Vishay Releases New Integrated Power Phototriacs in DIP-8 Package with Output Current up to 1 A

Space-Saving Devices Eliminate Need for Separate Power TRIACs

MALVERN, Pa. - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) is broadening its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of two integrated power phototriacs: the VO2223, which features an output current of 0.9 A, and the VO2223A, which features an output current of 1.0 A. These new power phototriacs integrate functions formerly performed by two discrete devices, a phototriac and a power TRIAC. By eliminating the need for an external power TRIAC, the devices save board space and reduce cost.

Packaged in the 8-pin DIP, the optocouplers protect people against electric shock and low-voltage control circuitry against overload conditions by optically isolating high-voltage power supplies in home appliances and many other systems.

Rated at a 600-V blocking voltage, the VO2223 and VO2223A provide isolation between DC and AC voltages on 120-V and 240-V AC lines and offer an input-to-output isolation voltage of 5300 V, which is 32 % higher than the closest competing device.

Power phototriacs are commonly used in home appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators, which feature a control panel the consumer uses to set temperature. While such control panels are typically powered by voltages of less than 5 V DC, the blower motors to which they are linked are typically powered by a high-voltage AC source. The power phototriac performs two functions: switching on the power to the blower and isolating the control panel from high voltage spikes and noise from the motor. A 10-mA input trigger current from a microcontroller turns on the power phototriac which in turn provides power to the motor.

Samples and production quantities of the new VO2223 and VO2223A power phototriacs are available now, with lead times of eight weeks for large orders.
