Eaton Helps OEMs Build Smaller, Smarter Machines with Lean Automation Solutions

New HMI with Integrated Logic Communicates Directly through the SmartWire-DTTM System to Drive Efficiency

PITTSBURGH … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation is introducing the XV Series operator interface and controller into the North American market. Already available in Europe, the XV Series human machine interface (HMI) incorporates programmable logic controller (PLC) functionality and integrates directly with the Eaton SmartWire-DT system. Designed for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the XV Series HMI-PLCs combines control, visualization and data management tasks in a single device, while the SmartWire-DT system replaces traditional control wiring to components with a single cable – enabling simplified and less error-prone connectivity.

“With state-of-the art electrical components, Eaton is transforming the way OEMs build machinery and control panels by making processes lean,” said Richard Chung, product manager at Eaton. “The XV Series HMI-PLC enables a high-level level of diagnostics at little additional cost, compared to conventionally wired components.”

The XV Series HMI-PLC with SmartWire-DT connectivity is designed to enable remote intelligence, eliminate an entire device level and make complex wiring unnecessary for smaller and smarter machines. Designed to handle demanding PLC applications, the XV Series HMI-PLC removes the physical PLC, incorporates logic into the operator interface, and provides a single software package for control and visualization. With a 400M-hertz (Hz) reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processor and custom-developed software drivers, the XV Series HMI-PLC handles demanding control requirements for machine applications.

The XV Series HMI-PLC supports the trend toward interoperability that allows machine and system builders to leverage programming environments across a range of systems. By using the open Controller Development Software (CoDeSys) standard, OEMs can develop and program the control and visualization of machine applications using a single programming package that enables faster and simpler integration.

The XV Series HMI-PLC has an optional integrated SmartWire-DT master, which eliminates the need for a gateway and SmartWire-DT devices can connect directly into the back of the panels ranging in size from 3.5 to 10.4 inches. Additional communication options include RS-485, CANopen, and PROFIBUS DP.

Eaton xSoft-CoDeSys-2 programming software is International Electrotechnical Commission 61131-3 compliant and used to program both the visualization and logic control in the XV Series HMI-PLC. The SmartWire-DT system can also be configured with xSoft-CoDeSys-2. Therefore, the visualization, logic, and end devices are all conveniently programed with a single software package.
