Mitsubishi Introduces World's Largest Electric Injection Molding Machine

BENSENVILLE, IL - (June 8, 2006) At 3300 and 3900 tons, the new Large em Series from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the world's largest electric injection molding machine.

Combining both electric and hydraulic press features, the Large em Series drastically reduces cycle times. Fact is, the Large em offers the industry's fastest automotive bumper cycle time of 30 seconds. High-speed mold opening and closing rates are up to 1.3 times faster with this machine compared with MHI's conventional models.

The Large em features superior injection performance made possible through the use of direct drive (DD) motors on the injection unit. The DD motor was designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries specifically for injection molding machine applications. The DD motors are directly coupled to the injection ball screws thus eliminating the need for drive belts ands pulleys. Because the system does not require drive belts, the motors are synchronized electronically. The DD injection system provides the highest overall injection performance in the 3000 ton class.

The Large em's incorporation of a 2-platen mechanism points to highly accurate mold clamping. Clamping force is applied at four points by an energy saving on-demand hydraulic power unit built into the machine base for equal application of mold clamping force. Even in unbalanced mold conditions, the mechanical structure of the clamp is not affected and a high degree of parallel accuracy is maintained. The Large em also features a Center Press Clamping Mechanism that virtually eliminates center flash from the molding process. The servo motor drives for the moving platen promote accuracy during mold opening and closing.

The Large em's construction features add to its precision performance. Long platen supports resist tilting and ensure parallelism of the moving platen and the mold, while linear guides with low frictional characteristics protect high sensitivity molds. Durability and reliability test results confirm the rigidity of components. And, although the Large em is the largest injection molding machine of its type, it features the shortest footprint in its class due to its two-platen clamp design.

The Large em Series is equipped with Mitsubishi's MAC-VIII control system. This easy-to-use system features a large 12" LCD touch screen, an automatic mold thickness adjustment, Jet Purge and more.
