Model PE21 has 2:1 optics making it suitable for applications where sensor can be mounted close to target, Model PE151 is designed for small/distant targets and has optical resolution of 15:1, while Model PE301 is intended for very small/distant targets and has optical resolution of 30:1.

New Calex PyroEpsilon Non-Contact Infra-Red Temperature Sensor with Remote Adjustable Emissivity Setting


Calex is pleased to announce yet another first in the field of infra-red thermometry, the new PyroEpsilon series non-contact temperature sensors.

The PyroEpsilon series is a range of high quality, low cost, compact sensors which measure the temperature of inaccessible or moving objects and materials. They can measure temperatures from -20°C to 500°C, accurately and consistently, with an outstanding response time of 240 ms.

Calex PyroEpsilon sensors provide a linear 4 to 20 mA output representing target temperature plus a 4 to 20 mA input to control the sensor's emissivity setting. This method of emissivity adjustment is far more accurate and repeatable than a built-in potentiometer, much easier to access and less prone to drift through vibration.

The sensor's emissivity setting can be adjusted from 0.2 to 1.0 to cope with different target materials and presents the opportunity for automatic control using a programmable logic controller (PLC). Alternatively the emissivity setting can be adjusted manually using the optional PyroTune module. If the 4-20 mA input is left open or short-circuit the emissivity setting defaults to 0.95.

The PyroTune module can also be used as a low cost setpoint transmitter for regulating control valves or adjusting the setpoint on a remote controller.

All PyroEpsilon sensors are fitted with precision Germanium lenses for accurate optics. Model PE21 has 2:1 optics making it suitable for most applications where the sensor can be mounted close to the target. Model PE151 is designed for small or distant targets and has an optical resolution of 15:1. Model PE301 is designed for very small or distant targets and has an optical resolution of 30:1.

These compact sensors are small enough to fit almost anywhere and their rugged stainless steel housings make them ideal for applications where cleanliness and hygiene are paramount.

The sensor itself is just 103 mm long by 18 mm diameter and made of polished stainless steel, sealed to IP65. It is held in place by a mounting nut (included). Fixed and adjustable brackets are offered to simplify mounting and a laser-sighting tool is available to assist in the sighting of the sensor.

If the sensor is required to operate in a very high or low ambient temperature (less than 0°C or more than 70°C) it can be ordered with a water/air-cooled jacket built around it. For dusty environments, such as in paper or textile mills, an air-purge collar can be fitted to keep the lens clean.

Built-in adaptive filtering provides a very stable signal without compromising the remarkable 240 ms response time, so there is no need to sacrifice a fast response in order to achieve a stable reading.

PyroEpsilon sensors are RoHS compliant and conform to EN 61326-1:2006 for EMC. They are designed and built by Calex Electronics in the UK, a company with more than 30 years experience of non-contact infra-red temperature measurement.
