CalAmp's Guardian(TM) Industrial Wireless Modems Provide a Transparent Interface for Data across VHF, UHF and 900 MHz Licensed Spectrum

High-speed serial connectivity for robust data communications enables reliable remote monitoring and control for utilities, oil and gas, and other industrial applications

OXNARD, Calif., -- CalAmp Corp. (Nasdaq: CAMP), a leading provider of wireless products, services and solutions, today announced the release of the Guardian(TM) serial modem for private networks operating across VHF, UHF and 900MHz licensed spectrum. Representing the latest generation of CalAmp narrowband serial communications devices, the robust Guardian data modem is ideally suited for oil and gas, smart grid, water/wastewater, SCADA and other demanding industrial wireless applications that require reliable, remote data transmission.

"The Guardian series provides a transparent data link suitable for a wide variety of mission-critical applications," noted Rick Nozel, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for CalAmp's wireless networks business. "Designed for high-reliability and efficiency, Guardian provides exceptional performance, supporting multiple host devices, protocols and operating modes."

Guardian complies with the US Federal Communications Commission's narrowbanding requirement intended to increase radio spectrum capacity and accommodate more users. Guardian is also compatible with many legacy deployments, such as RNet(TM) and COR(TM) brand radio modems via the Dataradio Interoperability Standard (DI-OS).

"It is important to note," Nozel said, "that even as CalAmp advances the state of the RF industry through the development of IP-based wireless communications platforms, there are tens of thousands of legacy private network serial devices requiring upgraded communications. Legacy system users can effortlessly expand their networks for more demanding applications by adding backward-compatible Guardian serial modems - there is no need to invest in an entirely new communications infrastructure."

The Guardian software-defined radio is a versatile wireless modem with features including:
  • 1-10 W (1-8 W MAS) Software Selectable
  • 10-30 VDC Wide Range Power Supply
  • Flexible, Programmable External I/O interface
  • Single radio store-and-forward operation
  • On/Off-line Diagnostics for Network Health and Status
  • Software programmable channel bandwidth
  • User-selectable data rates of 4,800, 9,600, and 19,200 bps
  • OTA Compatible with T-96SR, RNet and TSLM Devices
  • Supports RTS-CTS or DOX
  • Simplex, Half Duplex or Full Duplex operation
  • User selectable operating modes (RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485) for added flexibility
  • Ruggedized housing for extreme environments and applications

CalAmp's industrial wireless solutions combine utility-class performance and the proven reliability needed for mission critical communications. Its ruggedized line of licensed, unlicensed, and cellular devices provide narrowband, wideband and broadband data connectivity for fixed and mobile applications. CalAmp will be exhibiting Guardian serial modems in Booth #100 at the Energy, Telecommunications and Electrical Association's Entelec Conference and Expo, May 24-26, 2011 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston, TX.
