New C300 In-Line-Connector Seating Machine

Tyco Electronics is offering a new in-line connector seating machine. The C300 uses the PCB handling function of the well-proven P300 Pin Insertion machine as its basis. State-of-the-art electrical presses with press capacity of up to six tons integrate force distance monitoring to provide an optimal seating process.

Connector Seating into PCBs

Automotive Connectors with Press-fit Technology

The number of automotive connectors featuring press-fit technology is constantly increasing. Presently these connectors are processed in one of two ways, either pressed off-line on manual presses with the required force distance monitoring as a quality assurance measure, or using specially designed machines to press them into PCBs.

Tyco Electronics is offering a new concept for an in-line connector seating machine. The C300 uses the PCB handling capability of the well-proven P300 Pin Insertion machine. State-of-the-art electrical presses with a press capacity of up to six tons integrate force distance monitoring to provide an optimal seating process. A barcode reader on the input transfer belt is also available, as is a vision system for board error correction.

Connectors can be presented either on manually loaded vibratory tracks, in tubes, on trays or in bulk using a bowl feeder. Each feeding unit transfers indivuidual connectors to a pick-up position where a standard handling unit grips the connector and places it onto the positioned PCB. After all connectors have been placed on the PCB, the connectors are positioned sequentially under the electrical press. An automatic tool changer with an integrated anvil changer allows the pressing of different connector types in one set-up.

The traceability feature couples the barcode of the PCB with the force distance curve of each pressed connector and the barcode of the connector packaging.

The C300 also allows the assembly of a housing with in-molded press fit terminals and a PCB. The housing is loaded onto the X/Y-table of the C300 and placed on a carrier, while the PCB arrives in the machine on a separate PCB transfer belt. The PCB can be loaded from a magazine or directly from the production line, or from an in-line depanelling system.

The PCB is picked up by a standard handling system and is placed on the pins inside the housing. The assembled unit is then positioned under the press and the PCB is pressed into the housing. The completed assembly is unloaded on a transfer belt and transported to operations further down the line.
