Smith & Nephew Brings High Definition Image Capture to the Operating Room

New Surgical Image Management System Seamlessly Integrates with Medical Center's IT Architecture

ANDOVER, Mass., July 25 -- Smith & Nephew's (NYSE:SNN) Endoscopy division today announced the launch of its high definition 660HD Image Management System, which can digitally capture, edit, export and print endoscopic surgical images, and patient information.

Medical facilities collect a great deal of patient information in a variety of images -- still photos and digital video of diagnostic procedures or surgeries. Many medical centers lack an efficient means of managing this information.

The 660HD Image Management System enables the medical practitioner to select the most significant and useful images captured during any type of surgical procedure. The OR staff can export the images to DVD, CD or USB, and integrate them into the hospital's information technology architecture, where they can be stored with the patients' electronic medical record.

The 660HD Image Management System can interface with any hospital information system, but is designed as a key component of Smith & Nephew's Digital Operating Room, which incorporates Internet, digital and A/V technology, and can be customized for specialty surgeries, such as cardiac, arthroscopic or general surgery procedures.

"The 660HD Image Management System is a technological advancement in digital image capture," said Dr. Doug Dietzel of Michigan State University Sports Medicine. "It enables my staff and me to quickly and easily capture surgical images and videos to produce complete and accurate patient reports, which is critical to delivering quality patient care."

Surgical images that have been recorded using "true High Definition" technology can be stored with the same top quality image resolution that is the standard in the film and television industries.

"We designed the 660HD Image Management System for ultimate flexibility," said Sal Chiovari, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy's vice president for Digital OR. "It can manage the patient information generated by a small day surgery center and a large medical facility with equal efficiency, and can be configured to interface with a broad range of hospital information systems."
