September 22, 2009 - Dual-action hydraulic press, aided by custom tooling, can produce accurate prototype products for analysis and testing. Its 2-axis design replicates manufacturing operation and produces samples with properties similar to those required in actual production. Built around 20-ton vertical cylinder and 5-ton horizontal cylinder that operate in force-over-time mode as selected in operator interface, press also features electronic controls, 10 in. screen, and Ethernet connectivity.

New 2-Axis Hydraulic Press for Prototyping and Production Simulation

In many high-volume production operations, the synchronized application of vertical and horizontal force on the end product is critical. Pressure must be applied and released from both axes simultaneously and at the same rate. Phoenix has designed a dual-action hydraulic press that, with the aid of custom tooling, can produce accurate prototype products for analysis and testing. The two-axis design replicates the manufacturing operation, and produces samples with very similar properties to those required in actual production. As an example, pharmaceutical scientists determine the proportion of drug compounds and inactive ingredients in medicinal tablets. Prior to volume production, sample tablets produced by the Phoenix press are tested for mechanical properties to minimize development time in the manufacturing process. The heart of the press consists of a 20 ton vertical cylinder and a 5 ton horizontal cylinder. The cylinders operate in a force-over-time mode as selected in the operator interface. The ramp time for each cylinder is 30 to 60 seconds, with a hold time ranging from 5 seconds to two minutes. Pressure is controlled to within ± 5 percent. Electronic press controls include a Delta Motion Controller, Micrologix 1100, and a PanelView operator interface with a 10" screen. PLC/HMI communications are provided through Ethernet connections.
