Introduction of the World's First Hybrid Torque Control Assembly Solution

In response to the demand from the assembly industry for a less costly, but highly repeatable and efficient cell based torque driver, Mountz introduces the Hybrid, a revolutionary change in repeatable screw fastening technology. The patented HD Series Torque Control System is the world's first torque control tool using both air and electric power to set and control torque. The HD's precise pneumatic pressure sensor and patented algorithm allow for precision digital torque selection. Adjustable torque and parameter settings occur with "one touch" on the front panel or through PLC signal. A high accuracy, brushless DC motor provides repeatable torque control. The entire system sells for 70% less than conventional technology.

"Companies are looking to save time by improving the efficiency of their production space and methods. They want these results in a versatile production environment equipped for fast changeover to different projects", says Brad Mountz president of Mountz, Inc. "The HD Series is technically innovative, but most important it hits a bulls eye on the key objectives customers seek in advanced fastening solutions - lower cost, ability to leverage investment over multiple products, technology that is easy to learn and use and tangible quality benefits. Lean manufacturing techniques helped to drive the Hybrid product development, which was designed in cooperation with a major electronics product maker who clearly specified their desire in a product. We simply listened and collaborated."

The HD-Series delivers this cost and quality benefit through useful features such as digital adjustable torque setting, variable torque and speed control, multiple I/O options for integration with PLC and other line control techniques. A Windows based software package that can customize each fastening applications is included with the product. The torque control system features built-in error proofing data and screw counter. Multiple fastening strategies can be implemented for sensitive or of difficult assembly joints. The HD Series tool increases productivity as one tool can be programmed to do the job of multiple conventional tools, saving time, maintenance cost, space and training.

The HD-Series features a programmable digital torque setting with memory for 8 preset torque settings. The electric screwdrivers feature a high performance brushless motor design that provides durability and reduces the standard maintenance costs for electric screwdrivers. The casing and bit tip of the electric screwdriver is designed to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). The controller of the HD-Series features a built-in screw counter, which prevents screw-fastening errors and detects cross threading, omissions, unfinished rundowns and cycle incompletes. Using a screw counter is like putting the eyes and ears of a quality control manager where they are needed most - right at the assembly area. HD crew counting and error detection verify that all fasteners have been installed and that they were seated to the assigned preset torque setting.

Controlling torque is quintessential for companies to ensure their product's quality, safety and reliability isn't compromised. The failure of a three-cent fastener that isn't properly tightened can lead to catastrophic or latent failures. Fasteners that are insufficiently fastened can vibrate loose and excessive torque can strip threaded fasteners. Using a quality electronic torque control system has become increasingly important for many companies to ensure that proper torque is being applied and maintains gauge requirements associated with the ISO 9001 Quality Standard.
