BI Technologies Develops Low Profile, High Power Shielded Inductors

Shielded power inductors with 3mm board-mounted profiles ideal for computer applications...

Fullerton, Calif (March 20, 2006) - Providing design engineers with an ideal component solution for applications where power efficiency is critical, TT electronics BI Technologies Magnetic Components Division recently developed a series of high power shielded inductors with profiles as low as 3mm. Designated the HM69 Series, the inductors are designed to operate at frequencies up to 5MHz, with current ratings up to 70A.

According to David Smolik, Director of Product Development for the TT electronics BI Technologies Magnetic Components Division, the inductors present lower losses than comparable designs due to their construction. "As power density levels in converters increase, low winding resistance and low core material losses are critical," said Smolik. "The HM69 Series inductors, with their single turn construction and proprietary ferrite core material, exhibit lower losses than other powdered iron designs."

The high power, low profile inductors are ideal for the growing market of the intermediate power bus architecture for blade servers, Smolik continued. The devices are also suitable for other computer and networking applications, including high frequency, high current switching power supplies, point-of-load devices and multi-phase voltage regulator modules.

The HM69 Series inductors feature ten case sizes with an inductance range of 25nH to 300nH at 100Khz, typical DC resistance from 0.17milliohm to 0.45milliohm at 25°C, and rated current from 18A to 70Adc. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +125°C, with a maximum ambient temperature of +85°C. The inductors feature class F, 155°C insulation and are RoHS compliant.

Typical pricing for the HM69 Series inductors is about $0.40 to $0.80, depending on size and quantity. Lead time is from stock to 8 to 10 weeks.
