Original Press Release:

New Fiber Closure from 3M Enables Easy Installation and Re-Entry in Most Environments

AUSTIN, Texas - Service providers needing to protect fiber splices over long-haul, metro, local-access and fiber-to-the-premise feeder and distribution networks now have a new solution. The Fiber Dome Closure FDC 12S and Fiber Dome Closure 08M from 3M Communication Markets Division capitalizes on the company's core strength of environmental and mechanical protection products with more than 40 years in the telecommunications industry.

The introduction of these additional closures further expands the 3M family of fiber dome closures, giving service providers a comprehensive range of solutions.

The FDC 12S and 08M closures are designed for butt, single or ribbon fiber cable and are hermetically sealed for aerial, pole/wall, pedestal or below-grade applications. Constructed of highly chemical-resistant material, the closures can be deployed in harsh outdoor environments. The fixed O-ring sealing system and the innovative latching mechanism of the closures permit quick, virtually error-free installation and easy re-entry.

Like the recently released Fiber Dome Closures FDC 08S and FDC 10S from 3M, the FDC 12S and 08M closures utilize the external cable assembly module (ECAM) built-in cable entry port system. The ECAM design allows true plug-and-play capability, which can reduce installation and labor costs because the cable preparation and installation are completed outside of the closure body. The built-in cable entry system allows the technician to add and remove cables from the closure without breaking the cable seals.

The FDC 12S closure's adjustable and removable tray support bracket provides additional slack storage and enables easy installation of cables after the initial install. A hinged splice tray allows access to any splice without disturbing other trays. The FDC 12S closure can accommodate up to eight splice trays.

The FDC 12S closure is equipped with one oval port for express or mid-span cable applications and five round branch cable ports. The oval main cable port accommodates two 27 mm (1.06 inches) diameter cables and each of the five round cable ports accommodates one 27 mm (1.06 inch) diameter all-dielectric or armored cable. The splice capacity of the FDC 12S closure is 576 single-fiber or 864 mass-fusion splices.

The FDC 08M closure is equipped with one oval port for express or mid-span cable applications and eight round branch cable ports. The oval main cable port accommodates two 20 mm (0.79 inches) diameter cables and each of the round cable ports accommodates one 12 mm (0.47 inch) diameter all-dielectric or armored cable. The splice capacity of the FDC 08M closure is 48 single-fiber or 144 mass-fusion splices.
