Hardened Tempered Strip Steel in Oscillated Coils Provides Production Efficiencies with Savings up to $43,750

Kenilworth, NJ: Blue Blade Steel Company offers hardened tempered strip steel wound in compact, large capacity oscillated coils to enable significant production cost savings.

In comparison to a traditional ribbon-wound coil in which the steel is rolled directly on top of itself in a flat roll configuration similar to a spool of gift wrap ribbon, the oscillated coil places strip steel in a compact coil, similar to the way in which line is wound onto a fishing reel.

One single 2,000 lb. oscillated coil contains as much as 45 miles of strip material and replaces up to 25 ribbon-wound coils containing .010 inch thick, 0.25 inch wide steel. A compact, oscillated coil can last for an entire day of production—eliminating frequent line startup and changeover, scrap, tooling wear, and safety issues.

An annual savings of $ 43,750 is calculated by considering that an average production day requires 7 flat ribbon-wound coil changes per day, with each one taking about 15 minutes for the changeover. Production charges are based on 50 weeks of a 5-day workweek with hourly costs estimated at $ 100.

Oscillated coils run seamlessly—requiring less machine downtime and fewer changeover startups. Consequently, there are fewer operating problems and less stop and go stress and fatigue on tooling.

The tempered strip steel can be produced with slit, deburred, round or square edges and wound into oscillated coils. In addition, the tightly wound coils feed evenly and safely resist spontaneous uncoiling and lash-back injuries.
