Handheld Instrument measures color and gloss.
October 6, 2005 -
Developed to meet tight specifications of automotive interior applications, spectro-guide gloss-S measures 45/0 or sphere color and 60° gloss simultaneously. Repeatability of ±0.1 GU for 60° gloss, less than 10 gloss units is guaranteed, allowing gloss control within ±0.3 gloss units. Measurement principle ensures true circumferential illumination, eliminating any influence of measurement direction. Battery-operated unit requires calibration every 3 months.

Color and Gloss Control of Automotive Interior Parts - Combined In One Instrument, New Spectro-Guide Gloss - S
BYK-Gardner - world-wide partner of the automotive, paint and plastic industries for quality control of color, appearance and physical properties - is introducing the new spectro-guide gloss - S family with tighter specifications needed for automotive interior applications.
The quality and a high value impression of the interior are getting more and more important when purchasing a car. A variety of materials like leather, plastics or fabrics are used and need to be harmonized in regards to appearance. A uniform look can only be achieved by requiring very tight tolerances from the different component suppliers.
The spectro-guide gloss - S was developed especially for these tight QC requirements. It is the only instrument to measure color (45/0 or sphere) and 60° gloss simultaneously. For interior parts, usually a very low gloss appearance is requested and should be controlled within half a gloss unit. The patented calibration procedure in conjunction with the use of special mat range standards allowed increasing the technical performance of the spectro-guide gloss - S family. As a result the repeatability of +/- 0.1 GU for 60°Gloss < 10 gloss units can be guaranteed, which consequently allows controlling gloss within +/- 0.3 gloss units.
In addition, an excellent repeatability even on textured or structured surfaces is guaranteed. The innovative BYK-Gardner spectro-guide with 45/0 geometry uses a new, patented measurement principle that ensures a true circumferential illumination, and therefore, eliminates any influence of the measurement direction.
The spectro-guide is always ready to use: batteries last for up to 8,000 readings, calibration is needed only every 3 months, and its patented temperature control allows to measure color and gloss wherever needed, without worrying about variations in readings due to temperature fluctuations. Also documentation is easy: The included software easy-link directly transfers data to Excel® and immediately displays the results in a professional QC-report.
