MEMS Navigation, Guidance, and Control System Offers Multi-axis Sensor Technology and Maintains Navigation After GPS is Lost

BEI First to Provide Volume Production Capabilities in MEMS-Based Inertial Navigation System (INS) Technology

CONCORD, Calif - April 23, 2002 - BEI Systron Donner Inertial, a division of BEI Technologies, Inc., has introduced the MIGITS(TM) (MEMS Integrated GPS/INS Inertial Tactical System) family of products designed to meet many applications requiring guidance, navigation and control. The new miniature system is ideally suited for use in a variety of market areas including targets and drones, unmanned vehicles, tactical missiles, smart bombs, range instrumentation, commercial aviation, railroads, and helicopters.

The heart of the new MIGITS is a small quartz MEMS inertial sensor cluster, which provides the high accuracy and tactical grade inertial measurement performance required for rugged environments in the aviation, military and aerospace industries. This mature MEMS technology and miniaturized design has resulted in a six degree of freedom sensor assembly within a small 1.7-inch cluster.

The MIGITS system features a compact, lightweight housing and couples GPS and INS measurements to provide position accuracy even in the absence of GPS, in addition to providing heading and attitude information. The robust C-MIGITS configuration combines quartz MEMS technology based inertial sensor cluster with a 12-channel C/A code GPS receiver to provide a single, unitized package as an off-the-shelf affordable solution.

Outstanding performance characteristics include shock resistance capabilities of 20 g (11 ms, half-sine pulse), and vibration resistance up to 12 gRMs. Accuracy for standard system outputs includes position at 3.9 m SEP, velocity at 1.0 ms, attitude at 1.0 mrad, and heading at 1.5 mrad.

Weighing only 2.4 pounds (1.1 kg.), the MIGITS system fits easily into five-inch diameter enclosures and provides a single source of information for position, velocity, time, attitude, altitude, heading, acceleration and angular-rate data.
