Cummins Power Generation is First To Introduce Tier 3 Generator Sets



MINNEAPOLIS - Cummins Power Generation is the first manufacturer to introduce a new series of 150 kW, 175 kW and 200 kW low-emissions diesel generator sets that comply with new EPA Tier 3 standards for nonroad (mobile) applications. In addition, these generator sets meet the EPA Tier 3 requirements for stationary generators that are scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2007.

The new generator sets are based on a Cummins 9-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine that offers very low emissions and fast transient response to load changes. The 60 Hz generator sets are intended for standby and prime power use in a wide range of applications and are backed by the Cummins global service network.

Cummins met the challenge of the Tier 3 reductions by capitalizing on its extensive expertise in combustion research. By focusing on in-cylinder technology improvements, Cummins was able to reduce NOx by 40 percent from Tier 2 levels without the use of complex external hardware or exhaust aftertreatments that increase installation, operation or maintenance costs for end-users. This design strategy has resulted in low-emissions generator sets with a smaller footprint, better performance, less complexity and more reliability.

The Tier 3 engine for this generator set series features a full-authority electronic control module and a high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection system that delivers improved response to transient loads, a sound reduction of 5 db(a) and better cold starting. The improved engine management system maintains an optimum balance between load demands, fuel-efficiency and emissions control.

The DSHAA generator set is standby-rated at 150 kW; and prime-rated at 135 kW. The DSHAB generator set is standby-rated at 175 kW; and prime-rated at 160 kW. The DSHAC is standby-rated at 200 kW; and prime-rated at 180 kW. The DSHA generator set series features PowerCommand® digital control system for total system integration, including automatic remote starting/stopping, precise frequency and voltage regulation, alarm and status message display, alternator protection, output metering and auto shutdown-at-fault detection. The generator sets are also NFPA 110 compliant for all standby applications.
