September 29, 2008 - Gelease(TM) material, formulated with some cross-linking, has strength to stay in place and does not pump out. Movement is minimized as material has some cohesive strength, but is still soft so it can absorb movement of surfaces caused by thermal coefficient of expansion differences of assembled parts and maintain integrity of thermal path. Gelease was designed for syringe dispensing or stencil printing.

LORD Corporation Develops Higher Performance Gelease Material

(Cary, NC - 07/21/2008)

LORD Corporation - a leading supplier of thermal management materials, adhesives, coatings and encapsulants to the electronics industry - has developed a new high-performance Gelease(TM) material.

According to Sara N. Paisner, Senior Scientist for LORD Microelectronics Technology, LORD Corporation's improved gel material, developed in response to market need, offers many advantages as compared to competing grease products. For example, the Gelease material has some cross-linking and therefore has the strength to stay in place and does not pump out. By partially cross-linking the material, movement is minimized as the material has some cohesive strength. Despite the cross-linking present in the material, the gel is still soft, so it can absorb the movement of the surfaces caused by the thermal coefficient of expansion (CTE) differences of the assembled parts, and hence maintain the integrity of the thermal path.

Developed based on mathematical modeling, LORD Corporation's solution is built on the same cure chemistry as the existing MG121 product. However, the new Gelease offers higher conductivity, lower modulus, improved thermal conductivity value of 3.8 W/mK, as well as best in class prevention of delamination issues. LORD Gelease was designed for syringe dispensing or stencil printing. Extensive thermal cycling and humidity testing validate that this material performs exceptionally well. The new material is ideal for automotive and consumer electronics and has been tested for use by a variety of customers.
