Gauging System offers 3D scanning and discrete measurement.

Press Release Summary:

With AutoGauge Plus In-Process Gauging System, users can create fully customized solution that automatically converts from collecting precise, discrete measurements to capturing complete 3D point clouds. While system is operating in discrete measurement mode, robot moves from feature to feature capturing images and calculating deviations from design intent. When system transforms into 3D scanning mode, sensor continuously sweeps over part and records full 3D digital representation.

Perceptron AutoGauge Plus - 3D Scanning and Discrete Measurement in One Solution

Plymouth, Michigan - Perceptron, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRCP), the global leader in non-contact measurement and inspection solutions with over 25 years of experience, today announced the release of AutoGauge Plus - the first in-process gauging system that offers freeform surface scanning and discrete feature measurement in one solution.

With AutoGauge Plus, users can create a fully-customized gauging solution that automatically converts from collecting precise, discrete measurements to capturing complete 3D point clouds. While the system is operating in discrete measurement mode, the robot quickly moves from feature to feature capturing images and calculating deviations from design intent. Those measurement results are then stored in Perceptron's proprietary database for further reporting and statistical analysis. When the system transforms into 3D scanning mode, the sensor continuously sweeps over the part and records a full 3D digital representation. The resulting scan data can then be compared to the CAD model of the part in order to generate a highly-intuitive surface variation color map. AutoGauge Plus delivers the best of both worlds - the speed of in-line measurement and the data density of automated scanning.

Mark Hoefing, Perceptron's Senior Vice President - Industrial Business Unit, commented, "The development of AutoGauge Plus is the direct result of our customers requesting more 3D information from their in-line systems. Currently, customers use Perceptron's in-line AutoGauge solution to measure discrete features and then remove the part from the manufacturing process so a secondary 3D scanning tool can capture the required 3D point cloud data. Using a single, automated solution such as AutoGauge Plus will allow our customers to make more efficient use of quality control resources so they can spend more time proactively improving the manufacturing process instead of collecting data."

Hoefing added, "One customer plans to operate the system in discrete measurement mode during full-production and then automatically switch into scanning mode during scheduled breaks or shift changes. In another one of our initial installations, a leading car manufacturer in Asia will be using AutoGauge Plus to scan prototype car bodies for complex feature extraction and will also capture 3D point clouds of vital build areas. Our system is expected to dramatically shorten the amount of time required to identify and correct problems."

Manufacturers of complex products are continuously striving for shorter time to market, improved quality, and higher returns on their investments in manufacturing equipment. AutoGauge Plus is a powerful new tool that can help them achieve these goals.
