New Platform Tames the 4G Data Deluge in 3G Networks

Tellabs(R) Smart GGSN empowers 3G networks with 4G performance

NAPERVILLE, Ill., -- As a torrent of mobile Internet traffic floods their 3G networks, mobile carriers need to maximize data capacity and minimize costs.

The new TellabsŪ Smart GGSN (gateway GPRS support node) harnesses the mobile data deluge. Based on the TellabsŪ SmartCore(TM) 9100 Platform, it lowers capital expenses, enables a smooth migration path to 4G and adds intelligence for improved network control.

"User demand for mobile Internet is rising daily. We help operators succeed by empowering their 3G networks to handle a deluge of data while dramatically reducing costs," said Rehan Jalil, senior vice president, mobile Internet at Tellabs. "TellabsŪ Smart GGSN handles 4G-sized data flows in 3G networks, while enabling a smooth migration from 3G to an evolved, distributed 4G packet core."

Higher capacity lowers capital expenses -- By handling more capacity than competitors, TellabsŪ Smart GGSN can cut capital expenses, shrink the equipment footprint and reduce power consumption.

Run 3G and 4G concurrently, upgrade to 4G easily -- What's more, the TellabsŪ SmartCore(TM) 9100 Platform can concurrently run 3G GGSN and 4G packet core applications. Such capability enables a smooth transition, through a simple software upgrade, from 3G GGSNs to an evolved 4G packet core. That makes the TellabsŪ SmartCore(TM) 9100 Platform a smart investment, solving both today's 3G packet core challenges and tomorrow's evolution to LTE.

Improve network intelligence, visibility and control -- TellabsŪ Smart GGSN adds intelligence to improve network control for mobile carriers. Analytics provide superior visibility into network usage and enable policy enforcement. Carriers can:
-- prioritize critical traffic,
-- gain real-time insights into what mobile Internet users are doing, in order to manage, tailor and improve the user experience, and
-- create a two-sided revenue model by monetizing off-portal services and content.

TellabsŪ Mobile Solutions add intelligence to mobile networks, empowering them to deliver location- and context-aware smart applications and services for the mobile Internet. The 2009 acquisition of WiChorus adds breakthrough mobile packet core technology and Internet Protocol (IP) expertise to the Tellabs mobile backhaul solution, dramatically raising the IQ of mobile networks.
