Emerson Introduces Gas Chromatograph with Significant Performance Enhancements over Previous Technologies

Drawing on Emerson's experience with more than 11,000 gas chromatograph installations in the field, the 700XA gas chromatograph sets new standards in performance, stability, ease of use, and serviceability.

HOUSTON - Emerson Process Management has released its new 700XA gas chromatograph for the natural gas and process industries. Building on Emerson's 50-plus years of experience with gas chromatograph technologies, the 700XA offers significant performance enhancements over previous-generation products. It is the latest in Emerson's line of transmitter-style gas chromatographs that also includes the Model 500 and Model 700.

With its robust, field-hardened, single-casing design, the 700XA operates to specification across the widest range of temperatures in the industry, from -40 to 60 degrees C (-40 to 140 degrees F). This means that the 700XA doesn't require an expensive environmentally-controlled shelter - and a 700XA that is installed in a shelter won't fail if the environmental control system does.

The 700XA also operates with the highest C6+ & C9+ repeatabilities in the industry, in both controlled and uncontrolled environments. These repeatabilities improve the value of the energy content measurements of natural gas streams, leading to more accurate billing and process control. Cross-validation with other metering equipment is likewise improved, preventing tracking errors that can arise with less precise repeatabilities.

The 700XA features a simplified design that streamlines installation, startup, and maintenance requirements. With fewer overall parts than previous-generation gas chromatographs, there are fewer parts to maintain. Valves are constructed with a single bolt for fast troubleshooting, and I/O boards simply snap into place. Most service calls requiring standard maintenance and spare parts replacements can be completed in less than an hour from power up to power down. The average annual total cost to service a 700XA gas chromatograph over a five-year period is expected to be around $250.

Ease of use was also a primary consideration in the design of the 700XA gas chromatograph. An available high-resolution, touch-key interface on the analyzer allows field calibration and adjustment without the need for magnetic wands or tactile buttons.

The 700XA incorporates Emerson's easy-to-use MON 20/20 gas chromatograph workstation software for measuring the gas streams commonly found in pipeline and process applications. The software enables users to access their 700XA gas chromatographs plant-wide with a single click, without browsing to locate specific analyzers. Its remote diagnostics capabilities also enable users to perform calibrations, modify analysis settings, and review reports and trends without going into the field.

In addition to Modbus and 4-20 mA communications, the 700XA also supports FOUNDATION fieldbus. Emerson's 700XA and 1500XA gas chromatographs are the world's first and only gas chromatographs to be registered by the Fieldbus Foundation. Benefits of FOUNDATION fieldbus include lower engineering costs, lower installation and startup costs, and reduced cabling needs.
