Fujikura Enters Industrial Sector with New Fusion Splicer


Rapidly growing fibre laser market the target for compact, intuitive splicing technology

30th July 2007 - Fujikura Europe Ltd. today announced the launch of a new fusion splicer to support the increasing use of fibre optics in industrial applications. With Large Diameter Fibre (LDF) splicing capability, the new LDF series of products is capable of splicing all types of fibre currently available.

The new range, with a smaller footprint than products currently available in this market, can perform accurate, reliable splices using an arc fusion technique, therefore eliminating the need for external gas supply. An intuitive graphical interface enables users to programme the products' automated alignment system, reducing user error when splicing complex fibres, such as polarisation maintaining fibre.

"Fibre optic technology now underpins a vast number of industrial products and applications, from fibre laser manufacture to welding and cutting on car production lines, and biomedical processes such as laser eye surgery," explained Fernando Terceiro, splicer business team leader at Fujikura Europe. "To serve these markets effectively, splicers must be compact, cost-effective and user-friendly, as operators may have to work with different types of fibre, in many different environments, often without specific training or experience in fibre processing."

The new splicers are designed for OEMs, R&D establishments, the medical industry, automotive industry, fibre laser manufacturers and universities. The products are equipped with wide view cameras to focus on the whole image of the maximum diameter LDF and utilise a high power arc discharge unit, coupled with modified electrodes to withstand the high current. The splicers also include new attenuation modes for polarisation maintaining fibres.

Fujikura's complete splicer portfolio will be on display at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2007, taking place 17-19 September at the Internationales Congress Centrum, Berlin.

Demonstrations will take place on the company's stand (#12015), and Fujikura products will be on show at the Opternus stand, (#12018), at the Light Brigade display, and the CTTS fusion splicing training area.
