Press Release Summary:

October 10, 2006 - DsRed-Monomer has red-shifted emission spectra that makes it suited for use as reporter for multi-color labeling applications. Also useful as fusion tag or to avoid green auto-fluorescence, this engineered monomeric form of normally tetrameric Discosoma sp. red fluorescent protein is useful for monitoring signal transduction pathways; observing gene expression; tracking subcellular organelles and proteins; and cell population labeling/identification.

Clontech Laboratories, Inc. Makes the DsRed-Monomer Fluorescent Protein Available to For-Profit Entities

Press release date: September 18, 2006

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 18 -- Clontech, a wholly owned subsidiary of Takara Bio Inc., announced today that it is now making the DsRed-Monomer fluorescent protein available to for-profit entities for both research and commercial use. Previously, the DsRed-Monomer was only available to not-for-profit organizations.

The DsRed-Monomer fluorescent protein is a highly engineered monomeric form of the normally tetrameric Discosoma sp. red fluorescent protein. It is the latest addition to Clontech's extensive Living Colors(R) line of fluorescent proteins. The red-shifted emission spectra of the Living Colors red fluorescent proteins makes them ideal reporters for multi-color labeling applications or to avoid green auto-fluorescence. The new DsRed-Monomer retains these valuable red-shifted spectral properties and is also monomeric, making it especially useful as a fusion tag. The new variant's monomeric structure has been confirmed by several independent methods, including gel filtration and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Additionally, its functionality has been validated by fusion to a wide variety of proteins with diverse functions and subcellular locations.

"As the premier supplier of fluorescent protein technologies to researchers since 1994, Clontech is proud of its extensive collection of fluorescent protein tools, which now includes the DsRed-Monomer. The Living Colors line provides the broadest spectral array of monomeric and multimeric fluorescent proteins available -- from blues, like our AmCyan, through far red-shifted proteins, such as HcRed," said Carol Lou, General Manager of Clontech Laboratories, Inc.

Clontech's Living Colors fluorescent proteins have broad applications in basic research and drug development. Proven uses include monitoring signal transduction pathways; observing gene expression in live or fixed cells; tracking subcellular organelles and proteins; and labeling to identify and isolate specific populations of cells. Clontech's Living Colors fluorescent proteins have been used successfully in both animals and plants. Significantly, due to the wide spectral separation of the Clontech Living Colors fluorescent proteins, it is possible to visualize multiple events simultaneously by both microscopy and flow-cytometry.
