August 2, 2011 - With X8L dielectric, FT-CAP Flexible Termination Capacitors operate at temperatures up to 150°C, minimizing ceramic chip failures. Units are available in DC voltages of 10, 25, and 50 V with capacitance from .012-10 µF. Utilizing conductive silver epoxy between base metal and nickel barrier layers, capacitors establish pliability while maintaining terminal strength. Flex Termination technology addresses flex cracks by directing circuit board stress away from ceramic body and into termination area.

Kemet Expands Flexible Termination System with X8L Dielectric

Greenville, South Carolina - KEMET Corporation (NYSE: KEM), a leading manufacturer of tantalum, ceramic, aluminum, film, paper and electrolytic capacitors, today announced the addition of X8L dielectric to its Flexible Termination System product line.

KEMET Flexible Termination Capacitors (FT-CAP) in X8L dielectric reduce ceramic chip failures in high temperature environments. Driven by demand for a more robust component, these devices perform reliably in operating temperatures up to 150°C.

"KEMET's FT-CAP addresses concerns for more flex-robust and reliable products in high temperature applications," said Tim Hollander, KEMET Specialty Product Manager. "This proven technology is available in commercial and automotive grade, and provides superior flex performance and improved reliability while minimizing the risk of a catastrophic and potentially costly failure."

Flexible Termination technology was developed to address flex cracks, the industry's primary failure mode for surface mount multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). This technology directs circuit board stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, therefore reducing the risk of mechanical damage to the component that can result in low IR or short circuit failures.

More Information on the Flexible Termination System

X8L FT-CAP is well-suited for high temperature bypass and decoupling applications. It utilizes a conductive silver epoxy between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system in order to establish pliability while maintaining terminal strength, solderability and electrical performance. This technology was developed to address flex cracks which are typically the result of excessive shear stresses produced during board flexure or thermal cycling. Flexible Termination technology directs board flex stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, therefore mitigating flex cracks which can result in low IR or short circuit failures.
