New T.M. Smith "Smith Grip(TM)" Flanged Chucks Are Ideal For Holding Gun Drills

A new line of flanged chucks, which are ideal for holding the shanks of gun drills and gun reamers, has been designed and developed by T.M. Smith Tool International, 360 Hubbard Ave., Mt. Clemens, MI 48043. www.tmsmith.com

Tom Wagner, T.M. Smith Tool chief engineer says, "Many of our tool holder customers have been requesting a flange-mounted, coolant-thru, easy-to-operate chuck that has high gripping power, is very accurate, and can be bolted right to the face of the spindle. For those reasons we are now offering the new "Smith Grip(TM)" chuck line, Fig. 1, that features chucks with 0.0002-in runout at 4-inches from the holder face, heavy-duty gripping by hand tightening with 90% contact with the tool shank, and the ability to handle high-pressure coolant."

Wagner adds, "The chuck design utilizes tapered inner and outer sleeves with a caged retainer of angled needle roller bearings between, that uniformly constricts the inner sleeve as the hand clamping nut is rotated towards the flange providing very accurate concentricity. Tightening and loosing is easily performed by hand, eliminating the need for any special wrenches."

The Smith Grip chucks have from four to six mounting screws in the bolt circle around the flange, depending on the flange diameter. Four tuning screws mounted around the periphery of the flange OD provide for "zeroing-out" of the concentricity. There are 31 different chuck sizes available with I.D. clamping ranges from 9.665 mm (.380-in.) to 64.540 mm (2.580-in.). Special designs are available on request as well as chucks with other standard style shanks.

T.M. Smith Tool International Corporation was founded in the 1957. It is a leader in the design and manufacture of quick-change tool holders for drilling, reaming and tapping. Over time, T.M. Smith has become well known, particularly in the worldwide automotive industry, for quality and innovative design and engineering.
