June 23, 2009 - Used to install telecommunication cables over extended distances, Sidewinder can be used as end-puller or placed at mid-point. Trailer-mounted unit employs one 32 in. dia capstan to provide controlled force to pulling of rope or tape. Take-up drum, driven independently by hydraulic motor, has detachable side to facilitate rope/tape removal and can be declutched from drive. Adjustable from 0-1,100 lb, pulling tension is displayed on dial gauge, and max pulling speed is 200 fpm.

New Sidewinder Trailer-Mounted F.O. Puller Provides a Controlled Force to Place Telecommunication Cables over Longer Distances


June 2009; Trevose, PA -- General Machine Products Company, Inc. (GMP), Trevose, PA, is pleased to introduce the "Sidewinder" Trailer-Mounted Fiber Optic Puller. The Sidewinder has been designed to exceed the requirements of installing telecommunication cables, employing a single 32 inch (813 mm) diameter capstan to provide a controlled force to the pulling of rope or tape. The unit can be used as an end-puller, or it can be placed at the mid-point of a section to assist the pull, thus enabling longer pulls to be achieved.

The Sidewinder has a rope/tape take-up drum, which is driven independently by a hydraulic motor. The take-up drum has a detachable side, which allows rope or tape to be removed from the drum in a tidy coil. The drum can be declutched from the drive to allow rope or tape to be pulled out manually when threading into a duct system.

The Sidewinder weighs 1,400 lbs. (635 kg) and is powered by a commercial-grade Honda GX390 gasoline engine which drives fixed displacement, tandem mounted, hydraulic pumps. The pumps are attached to the engine via a bell housing and flexible coupling. One pump powers the hydraulic motor through an in-line, planetary gearbox connected to the capstan. The second pump drives the rope take-up drum through a hydraulic motor. The hydraulic oil tank is fitted with double filtration protection, sight glass and filler/breather.

The pulling tension is displayed on a dial gauge, allowing the operator to monitor the pull. Tension is adjustable from 0-1100 lbs. (500 kg), with maximum pulling speeds up to 200 feet per minute (60 meters per minute). The winch will stop pulling at the selected tension without stopping the engine, thereby protecting the cable. The device is built on a robust steel chassis. The trailer equipment complies with D.O.T. standards, and features a single axle and telescopic jockey wheel. The unit can be easily pulled by a standard pickup truck.
