Olympic broadcasters have embraced new and improved methods of video transmission since 1964 when the world watched the first live satellite broadcast of the opening ceremonies in Tokyo, Japan. The first digital video Olympic broadcast occurred in 1994 at the winter games in Lillehammer, Norway using Force, Inc.'s first generation of serial digital component video links. Force DTVLinx® digital video links have been used by Olympic broadcasters ever since, and this year's summer games in Athens, Greece will use Force's latest generation of digital video transport links.
As it is with many Olympic broadcasts, the Athens summer games will be played in more than a dozen venues spread out over an area roughly 570 km in size. While the International Broadcast Center is centrally located to all the venues, some venues are more than 15 km away. For this reason, Olympic broadcasters selected Force, Inc. Model 2953 HDTVLinx® High Definition Serial Digital Video Fiber Optic Links to transmit video from several venues to the broadcast center. This next-generation video link is born of the same high quality technology Force provided to the 1994 Winter Olympics.
The Model 2953 link provides uncompressed digital video at a data rate of 1.485 Gb/s, creating a highly reliable system for transporting serial digital component video and embedded audio for distances as great as 80 km. The link offers a bit error rate (BER) of 10-12, ensuring that the system maintains optimum performance. This state-of-the-art SMPTE 292M and SMPTE 348M compliant system offers seamless transport from the sporting venues to the broadcast center.
