August 18, 2003 - Cooling Fan Modules employ feedback system in which actual speed of motor is fed back and small adjustments are made to compensate and maintain desired motor speed. Fan motor and control electronics are packaged inside shell to protect system from harsh, underhood conditions. Modules minimize noise that may disturb other electronic components, and are hardened to prevent deterioration if subjected to electrical noise spikes.

Johnson Electric Develops New Cooling Fan Modules for Better Fuel Efficiency and Emissions Control

As vehicles become more complex and engine compartments more crowded, one pressing challenge is to package more cooling capability into smaller and lighter assemblies. Johnson Electric has developed the latest addition to its Johnson Gate family of cooling fan modules that are robust and compact, provide improved reliability and efficiency, and help reduce fuel consumption, thus reducing tailpipe pollutants.

Now in advanced development, the modules provide automakers the opportunity to write algorithms to control engine, radiator and cabin temperatures with a high degree of accuracy. This is a function of motor speed control whose requirements vary by vehicle demands. Johnson Electric's modules provide flexibility in speed control by employing a feedback system in which the actual speed of the motor is fed back and small adjustments made to compensate and maintain the desired motor speed. In more sophisticated systems, temperature sensors that are located at points in the vehicle where temperatures need to be controlled precisely, provide thermal feedback. The motor speed can be incrementally adjusted to maintain those temperatures.

Another advantage Johnson Electric's modules have over other systems is packaging of the fan motor and control electronics inside a shell to protect the system from harsh underhood
conditions in a wide variety of applications. The modules have also been designed to minimize electrical noise that might disturb other electronic components and are hardened so that there is no deterioration if subjected to electrical noise spikes from other sources.

Advanced control methods will likely first be used in high-end vehicles where the price/performance advantage is justified. However, Johnson Electric is developing lower cost solutions for all vehicles as automakers compete to provide improvements across their entire range of vehicles.

Johnson Electric is designing and producing cooling fan modules with a wide range of control levels, from series resistance controls to fully integrated feedback systems for advanced cooling systems. Solving the geometrical and airflow problems, as well as the environmental issues for each individual under-the-hood design, is what drives ongoing development of the Johnson Gate cooling fan module product family.
