DuctSox® Intro Combats Thermal Decay & Improves Airflow, IAQ in Under Floor HVAC

DuctSox®, Dubuque, Iowa, a leading fabric HVAC air dispersion systems manufacturer, has introduced UnderFloorSox(TM) (UFSox(TM) ), an air dispersion system designed to reduce thermal decay and improve temperature consistency within the plenum for under floor air distribution (UFAD) systems for retrofit and new construction in commercial buildings.

UFSox are 12 to 18-inch-diameter round fabric air ducts routed through an UFAD plenum to distribute even air dispersion and temperature to perimeter, remote, and other high heat load zone areas which typically suffer thermal decays of 6°F or more with conventional UFAD systems.

In application, the system features a modular configuration as active linear dispersion sections to uniformly mix the supply and plenum air, which minimizes diffuser adjustments to maintain set point temperatures throughout the occupied space. This ensures the occupied space's partial displacement temperature gradient remains stable.

UFSox outperform the UFAD plenum supply air mixing strategies of air highways and metal duct/register systems. UFSox are also less expensive and more effective than adding structural supply chases.

Full-scale thermal performance tests by the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California-Berkley, have investigated the impact of distributing cool supply air into an underfloor plenum using UFSox. For the test configurations studied, the results indicated that compared to an open plenum design, the use of UFSox reduced thermal decay (temperature gain) in the perimeter zone and overall temperature distribution within the plenum was more uniform. More research is being done to determine fan power effects associated with adding UFSox.

UFSox are available in lightweight modular length sections that are easily zippered together on-site during installation. Because UFSox are interconnected with the raised access floor structure of UFADs, installation coordination is fast-tracked, plus its flexibility allows easy installation and access for electrical wiring and other UFAD utility components.

Other advantages UFSox offer are:

o no condensation formation on duct surfaces, which minimizes mold, mildew and other microbial dangers.
o Operable end cap allows for adjustment in airflow quantity and direction, especially important for perimeter areas.
o Modular design is reconfigurable for today's perpetually changing work space.
o Permanent labels are provided every two feet to indicate airflow direction and data cabling clearance considerations.
o System design is supported by DuctSox's in-house engineering department for every application.
