Kontron Introduces AIRES Line of Rugged Switches Designed for the Toughest, Extreme Environment Network Connectivity Needs

Rugged IP67 sealed switch family is essential building block that enables design flexibility while providing cost, small size and performance advantages

Washington, DC — Kontron, a leading global provider of Embedded Computer Technology (ECT), today introduced at the 2014 AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition the company’s new AIRES line of rugged switch products.  Designed to satisfy the harshest environment network connectivity requirements, the Kontron AIRES leverages Kontron’s extensive system architecture experience that has helped successfully deploy a broad range of communications infrastructure applications.   The first product in the rugged, IP67 sealed switch family features a cost-effective small form factor (1.75"H x 6.5"D x 8.5"W), low power design that offers 16x gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports with direct locking connectors. A second version (2.0”H x 6.5”D x 8.5”W) with 4x 38999 MIL Circular connectors supporting 4x GbE ports per connector is also available.  Both versions feature +28VDC power input for vehicle or aircraft and extended temperature -40C° to +71C° operation (fanless).  Using high temperature components along with an optimized thermal solution, the AIRES is specifically designed and tested to operate reliably in the toughest extreme environmental conditions found in military, avionics, commercial avionics, mining, smart grid, homeland security, rail transportation and oil & gas markets.  Kontron will demonstrate the capabilities of its AIRES rugged switch at the company’s AUSA booth #3543 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC, October 13-16, 2014.

The Kontron AIRES family ensures the highest connectivity and operational capabilities by providing a combination of port count, connector type, and power supply options and also offers a variety different front I/O versions and power supply options.  Based on select components from embedded roadmaps, the Kontron AIRES family provides long-term availability minimizing the risk of unplanned design changes and unexpected application modifications.

The Kontron AIRES family in detail

The AIRES product family extends Kontron’s Ethernet switch portfolio and features a fully managed layer 2/3 Gigabit Ethernet switch offering IPv4/IPv6 routing and full management capabilities. It supports a powerful set of CLI, Telnet, Web and SNMP management interfaces enabling developers to configure the entire set of communication protocols and parameters including Layer 2 and Layer 3 (IPv4/IPv6) protocols, Multicasting, QoS and Security.  In addition, AIRES is based on a powerful 600 MHz 32-bit PowerPC® RISC processor core and NXP 32-bit microcontroller.  It offers 512MB 200 MHz DDR2 RAM and 1GB NAND Flash for file storage.

Samples of the initial AIRES rugged switch (AIRES1600PDC0T1STD) are available now with full production expected in November 2014.  Kontron has plans to expand its product roadmap with additional AIRES rugged switch systems.  For more information, please visit the Kontron AIRES product page.
