ADVA Optical Networking Introduces Ethernet Access Solution Designed for Mobile Backhaul and Synchronous Ethernet Applications

FSP 150CC-GE206 is industry's first device with synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 technology, enabling intelligent, differentiated Ethernet services

Norcross, GA and Martinsried/Munich, Germany (PRWEB) May 13, 2009 -- To address the growing need by mobile and backhaul service providers for more Ethernet-based transport capacity, ADVA Optical Networking today announced the introduction of the FSP 150CC-GE206. The new device enables Ethernet and synchronization to be delivered over fiber-based Ethernet transport for service providers looking to deploy an Ethernet service optimized for mobile backhaul applications.

The majority of today's mobile base stations are currently connected by T1/E1 Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) links. With the growing number of mobile handheld devices that are capable of sending and receiving video and other advanced applications, the drive to high-capacity, high-bandwidth traffic is increasing.

Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research commented, "Despite an economic recession, mobile adoption is pushing network traffic volumes, and internet data and video are increasingly part of the mix. This is driving the need for higher-capacity mobile backhaul solutions, and mobile operators are looking for Ethernet products that enable them to lower their costs and handle increasing volumes. The ADVA FSP 150CC-GE206 is the first mobile backhaul product we've seen with both Synchronous Ethernet and 1588v2 - the technologies that solve the clock and timing synchronization issues in packet networks."

The FSP 150CC-GE206 enables synchronous Ethernet ('SyncE') to replace traditional T1/E1-based synchronization in the delivery of Ethernet services. Additionally, the service intelligence of the latest Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) standards such as 802.1ag, Y.1731 and RFC 2544 are all critical to guaranteeing that mobile Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met.

The ability to deliver intelligent Ethernet services that are functionally identical over a variety of access technologies is a key advantage of ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 150 product family.

"With recent advances in synchronous Ethernet ('SyncE') standards, the Ethernet protocol can now support mobile base station synchronization needs, and is also backwards compatible with 2G and 3G services," explained Christoph Glingener, chief technology officer at ADVA Optical Networking. "This new product expands our Ethernet access family of products in a way that supports the cost-effective delivery of new Ethernet services."

Low-touch provisioning and a rich set of remote OAM capabilities in the FSP 150CC-GE206 ensure that unskilled craft can install and turn up services without any onsite provisioning. Optional Wide Area Network (WAN) protection, redundant power supplies and temperature hardening ensure high service availability for mission-critical applications, while SLA verification is ensured via in-service SLA monitoring. Small Formfactor Pluggable (SFP) optical devices also address a wide range of optical fibers, reaches and wavelengths.
