Quantum Introduces Scalar 50 Tape Library

Provides User-Friendly Interface, Seamless Integration with Disk Systems and Easy, Cost-Effective Scalability for Small- to Medium-Sized Storage Environments

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 10 -- Quantum Corp. (NYSE:QTM), the leading global specialist in backup, recovery and archive, today announced the new Scalar(R) 50, an intuitive entry-level tape library designed to provide faster, easier and more reliable data protection for small- to medium-sized storage environments. Optimized with Quantum's user-friendly interface, it helps simplify the backup process, integrates with disk and scales easily to help customers meet the challenge of unforeseen data growth. The Scalar 50 is the latest offering in Quantum's industry-leading tape automation portfolio, which also includes the Scalar(R) i2000 and Scalar(R) i500 intelligent library platforms.

As customers' storage needs evolve, the Scalar 50 accommodates data growth cost-effectively by scaling from 38 slots up to 76 slots simply by adding a module. Specifically designed for seamless integration with disk systems, the Scalar 50 also supports disk-to-disk-to-tape data protection strategies, and it leverages Quantum's StorageCare(TM) Vision data management and reporting solution, which enables customers to manage and monitor multiple Quantum tape libraries and disk systems from one screen. All of this makes the Scalar 50 an ideal solution for simplifying backup processes.

"Small and medium businesses have difficulty predicting their ever-increasing data storage requirements," said Robert Amatruda, storage research director for IDC. "Solutions like Quantum's Scalar 50 tape library help to address customers' needs to add capacity with a scalable architecture, as well as the flexibility with mixed connectivity support."

The Scalar 50 library provides customers additional flexibility and choice by supporting full-height or half-height tape drive formats. In addition, it operates in direct-attach and SAN environments and offers advanced library functionality such as partitioning, multiple drive types, and FC, iSCSI, SAS and SCSI interfaces.

Easy to operate and maintain, the Scalar 50 has a simple interface to facilitate configuration, operation and service and also includes an integrated set-up wizard that enables customers to easily partition the library and schedule backups. Once the tape library is online, Quantum's StorageCare(TM) Guardian provides proactive monitoring and integrated RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) notification to deliver more reliable backups and faster resolution time for customers at no additional cost.

"Backup and restore capabilities are just as critical in busy workgroups and remote environments as they are anywhere else," said Todd Farley, product marketing manager for Quantum. "Resources are often limited so an IT administrator can't be burdened with complex storage management. The Scalar 50 tape library is ideal for these environments because it provides an easy-to-use, reliable and scalable solution that simplifies the backup process so customers can focus their attention on driving their business, not worrying about backups."

Pricing and Availability

The Scalar 50 tape library is now available through Quantum and its network of channel and distribution partners. Pricing starts at $8,000 MSRP. For more information on Quantum's Scalar 50, please visit: http://www.quantum.com/Products/TapeLibraries/Scalar50/Index.aspx.
