July 15, 2008 - Along with redundancy module, RSLogix 5000 integrates advanced process control (APC) function blocks that compensate for long, dead-time processes and facilitate multivariable control via built-in, automatic tuning. Blocks can control single process variable by manipulating single output, manage single process variable by manipulating up to 3 outputs, or manage 2 interacting process variables to target values using up to 3 control outputs.

Rockwell Automation Process Control System Introduces New Capabilities, Further Improving Productivity and Lowering Operation Costs

Latest version of RSLogix 5000 engineering software, and new redundancy and availability capabilities of Allen-Bradley controllers expand process automation system

MILWAUKEE, June 30, 2008 - Rockwell Automation has introduced three new advanced process control (APC) function blocks in the latest version of Rockwell Software RSLogix 5000 engineering software. Native to the Allen-Bradley Logix family of controllers, the new function blocks offer process users sophisticated APC technology that is simpler to implement. In addition, the company introduced a new redundancy module and improvements in system availability, further extending the capabilities of the company's process automation system. All are part of the Rockwell Automation continued focus on helping process customers improve their operations.

"We have experienced major growth in the adoption of the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture in process industries by focusing on the continued expansion of portfolio capabilities," said Som Chakraborti, business manager, Process Automation, Rockwell Automation. "For process automation users, the new offerings help improve the control and availability features of the Logix Control Platform."

Tightening control with APC function blocks

Process users across multiple industries, such as fermentation control in biotech, temperature control in glass manufacturing, chlorination and pH control in water treatment, and basis weight and moisture control in paper making, can take advantage of the new APC blocks. Since these applications have a longer dead time or interaction between multiple I/Os, process users often require a level of control flexibility that is not found in traditional PID-based systems.

The new APC blocks provide compensation for long, dead-time processes and allow simpler multivariable control with automatic tuning built-in. Control strategy implementation with the new blocks is straightforward and configuration is done within the RSLogix 5000 engineering software:

o Internal model control - Controls a single process variable by manipulating a single output using a predictive algorithm

o Coordinated control - Manages a single process variable by manipulating as many as three outputs. This technology is best applied when trying to optimize an economic constraint, such as energy consumption, to control multiple process variables.

o Modular multivariable control - Manages two interacting process variables to target values using up to three control outputs. Similar to coordinated control, this technology can help optimize multiple economic constraints to control multiple process variables.

Improving throughput with better redundancy

Allen-Bradley ControlLogix redundancy configuration is a core offering of the Rockwell Automation process automation system. The new redundancy module (RM) improves the configuration by improving the throughput capacity and switchover time. Supporting multiple controllers in one chassis, the new redundancy configuration expands the processing capacity to accommodate larger and more complex control projects. User-defined instructions are also supported in the redundancy configuration.

Improved availability means more uptime

Users needing to deploy, upgrade and maintain continuous process applications - without the risk of downtime - will appreciate the runtime partial import feature. On a running system, users can add programs, routines and user-defined instructions, and replace existing programs and routines from the RSLogix 5000 engineering environment. Faster control strategy changes can be made without affecting production.
