Cummins B3.3 Engine Ratings MSHA-Certified For Underground Mining
CUMMINS B3.3 ENGINE RATINGS MSHA-CERTIFIED FOR UNDERGROUND MINING
LAS VEGAS (March 19, 2002) - Cummins Inc. today (NYSE:CUM) announced that two ratings for its B3.3 engine - 65 hp and 85 hp - are now certified by the Mining Safety Health Administration (MSHA) for underground mining.
This approval is the third in a series of Cummins engines certified for underground mining. The B3.3 engine provides the underground market with an engine footprint that fits easily into equipment, with access to all maintenance points from either the left or right side.
The parent bore block of the B3.3 is rebuildable, and mechanical fuel injection delivers low fuel consumption as well as low emissions.
"The B3.3 joins other durable and reliable Cummins engines already approved for underground mining, including the 24-Valve Turbo Diesel engine in the Dodge Ram, the 650-hp QSK19 and the 116-hp B3.9 engine," said Joel Lerner, mining marketing director, Cummins. "Cummins has been a major engine supplier in surface mining for more than 30 years, and we are dedicated to serving the needs of the entire mining market."
Cummins also is developing with MSHA a 6CTA8.3 charge air cooled engine to meet Tier 2 emissions regulations for underground coal gassy applications. This 6CTA8.3 engine, which operates at low surface temperatures in a dangerous environment, is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2002.
"Recent changes to MSHA regulations now allow hard rock and metal mines to use EPA Tier 1 and Tier 2 approved engines," added Lemer. "This enables mines to use a broad range of Cummins products, with their small package size, in non-coal applications."
