January 27, 2003 - Laser Model RLE interferometer-based encoder uses fiber optic links to transport laser beam directly to axis measuring position. Optical beam-steerer reduces laser alignment to simple bolt-down and dial-in process. Using retroreflectors or plane mirrors, system can be applied to axis lengths up to 4 m. It allows outputs in digital RS422 format quadrature, with resolutions from 10-633 nm, or 1 Vpp Sin/Cos signals.

New Fiber Optic Laser Encoder Gives Revolutionary Approach to Interferometer-Based Feedback Systems

January 2003 - The new Renishaw RLE fiber optic laser encoder is an interferometer-based system designed to produce high resolution, linear position feedback signals, while maintaining an ease of installation comparable with traditional tape and glass based encoders. With axis lengths of up to one meter, when using plane mirrors, it is ideal for X-Y stages, wafer inspection machines, machine tools, CMMs, precision gauges, glass grinding machines and other precision motion systems.

The system provides both dual- or single-axis capability from a single laser source and uses fiber optic links to transport the laser beam directly to the axis measuring position. This radically reduces the external optical path complexity associated with other laser interferometers, which require a combination of optical components and precision mounts to deliver the beam to the axis. By comparison, the Renishaw system requires only one additional optic mounted on the moving element of the axis. To further simplify installation, the RLE encoder system incorporates an optical beam-steerer, reducing laser alignment to a simple "bolt down and dial in" process.

Available in a number of configurations, using retroreflectors or plane mirrors, the system can be applied to axis lengths of up to 4 meters. The system allows outputs in either digital RS422 format quadrature with resolutions from 10 nm to 633 nm, or 1 Vpp Sin/Cos signals where higher resolutions can be achieved by external interpolation. Used in combination with an optional real time compensation system, positional accuracy levels of 1 ppm (1 mm/m) can be achieved over a wide range of environmental conditions.
