Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Launches XploR(TM) Range of Explosive Decompression Resistant Materials for Oil & Gas Industry

First Perfluoroelastomer Sealing Material to Satisfy Stringent NORSOK M-710 Rapid Gas Decompression Test

Fort Wayne, IN - Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, a global manufacturer of high-performance industrial seals, announces the release of the XploR(TM) range of advanced elastomers, especially developed for oil & gas applications. The portfolio includes compounds in HNBR, FKM and Isolast® Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM), each of which demonstrates best-in-class Explosive Decompression Resistance (EDR) for its material type. In independent tests, materials within the XploR(TM) range were able to satisfy both the NORSOK M-710 sour service and Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) test conditions.

"As a seal developer and manufacturer with a significant proportion of our business in the oil & gas industry, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has focused on Explosive Decompression (ED)," says Eric Bucci, Oil & Gas Segment Manager for the Americas. "We have invested considerable amounts of development time and money in the quest to find Explosive Decompression Resistant materials. This gives great benefits to our customers, providing increased seal life."

Gas or gas mixtures in contact with elastomer surfaces can be absorbed under pressure. At high pressure absorbed gas is in a compressed state. When external pressure is reduced, either rapidly or over a relatively short period of time, the compressed gas rapidly expands within the elastomer. This can lead to crack initiation within the body of the elastomer. These cracks propagate internally and this can cause void formation or cracks to appear on the elastomer surface that significantly reduce seal integrity.

The XploR(TM) range is available in all standard international O-Ring sizes and cross sections, along with custom-engineered solutions and specially designed seal profiles.
