Avanex Develops the Smallest Integrated EDFA Optical Performance Monitoring Module

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 25 -- Avanex Corporation (NASDAQ:AVNX), a pioneer of intelligent photonic solutions that enable next- generation optical networks, today introduced an integrated product combining Erbium Doped Fiber Amplification with advanced Optical Performance Monitoring capabilities (EDFA-OPM) to its PureGain(TM) Optical Amplifier product line. This product seamlessly combines optical monitoring and control capabilities in a single module on the smallest available footprint. Avanex is currently shipping this product in volume deployments for next-generation networks targeting the delivery of high-bandwidth triple play services to home consumers. The EDFA-OPM module will be displayed at the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2006, booth 276 on Sept 25 - 27, at the Palais des Festival in Cannes, France.

The emergence of flexible metro and access network architectures is rapidly increasing the demand for convenient and cost-effective network performance monitoring. The EDFA-OPM's advanced optical monitoring capability meets these market needs by enabling automatic and remote EDFA control. The self-compensating solution significantly reduces operational expenses and minimizes overall system maintenance.

"Adding integrated monitoring and control capability to our amplifier products provides customers with another tool to reduce both network complexity and reduce service expense," said Richard Smart, general manager of optical line modules. "In addition, the smaller footprint, lower power consumption, and single electronic and software interface allows the product to be used in a variety of applications while minimizing customers' development time."

When compared to previous PureGain(TM) product generations, the integrated EDFA-OPM maintains backwards-compatible electrical and mechanical configurations, allowing existing customer networks to be conveniently upgraded with minimal redesign effort.
