BI Technologies' Dual Winding Inductor Deployed in GPS Systems, Handheld Devices

Rugged, versatile device features high inductance, excellent current handling capabilities...

LAS VEGAS, NV (May 12, 2009) - TT electronics BI Technologies, a leading manufacturer of magnetic components including inductors, transformers and common mode chokes, has developed a surface mount dual winding inductor that can also be used as a common mode choke. Designated the HM78D Series, the inductor is housed in a rugged, cost-efficient package and exhibits excellent current handling characteristics.

"The HM78D can be configured as an inductor, common mode choke or DC/DC converter, and functions as a high inductance, high efficiency part in all configurations," said Donna Schaefer, application engineering manager for TT electronics' BI Technologies. "The complete package-rugged, low profile, current handling capabilities, versatility and cost-make it ideal for consumer electronics, including GPS systems and battery-operated handheld devices, such as cell phones."

The surface mount inductor is also specified for use in SEPIC (single ended primary inductor converter) applications, as well as CD and DVD players, and digital cameras.

The HM78D inductor can be configured as two single inductors connected in series or parallel; or as a 1:1 transformer. The inductor features rated current inductance values ranging from 1.176µH to 4036µH when connected in series, and 0.33µH to 1000µH when connected in parallel. Maximum DC resistance ranges from 0.0295W to 15.6W, and 0.0074W to 3.89W, respectively. In series, rated current ranges from 0.135A to 3.6A, with a saturation current from 0.16A to 9.18A. In parallel, rated current ranges from 0.27A to 7.4A, with a saturation current from 0.31A to 18.4A. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +125°C. Custom devices are also available.

Typical pricing for the HM78D Series dual winding inductor is approximately $0.47 each in quantities of 10,000 pieces.
