Viking's Dry ESFR Storage Sprinkler Gains FM Approval
Hastings, Michigan, USA - Viking Corporation, a global leader in fire protection and life safety systems, has introduced a new FM Approved version of its innovative dry ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) pendent sprinkler. The new model VK502, which compliments Viking's existing UL Listed model VK501 dry ESFR sprinkler, eliminates the need for in-rack sprinklers and a dry or preaction system in certain freezer and cold storage applications.
Viking's patent-pending dry ESFR sprinklers, which must be installed on a wet pipe system, are well-suited for cold storage facilities where the system piping is installed in a heated space above the freezer area. In these applications, the VK501 (UL) and VK502 (FM) sprinklers significantly reduce the installed cost of a fire sprinkler system by providing ceiling only protection, without the additional costs associated with a dry or preaction system, including an in-rack sprinkler system, detection system, air maintenance system, low point drains, and other components.
In addition to dramatically reducing installed costs, a wet pipe system using Viking's dry ESFR sprinklers is significantly easier to service and maintain, thus lowering the system's total lifecycle costs for the end user. The dry ESFR sprinklers, which have a 14.0 (201) K factor, are Listed and Approved to protect the same commodities and storage arrangements as a standard K14 ESFR pendent sprinkler.
Each dry ESFR sprinkler is shipped standard with two insulating boots. These boots, which are installed above and below the ceiling penetration, help to seal the clearance space around the sprinkler's barrel, decreasing the potential for condensation and ice to build-up around the sprinkler. Both the VK501 and VK502 are offered in a single barrel length of 36 inches (0,9 m). The 165°F (74°C) sprinkler is available with a 2 inch (50 mm) grooved or 1-1/2 inch (40 mm) threaded connection.
