New Enkadrain® Contributes to LEEDS Program Credits

Enka, NC – Effective August 1, 2004 Colbond, Inc. announces the launch of a new family of environmentally conscious Enkadrain subsurface drainage composites. The new polypropylene core is made from 99.5% recycled post industrial waste, has higher flow rates, and is competitively priced to replace the original Enkadrain product line. Because these new drains exceed 40% post-industrial recycled content they help contribute up to 2 LEEDS program points when used in conjunction with other recycled content products.

The new Enkadrain 3000R series products are available with a filter fabric on one side and in the near future available with fabric on two sides and in double-wide rolls. The square waffle core configuration is identical to the original Enkadrain products, but the recycled polypropylene makes the product slightly stiffer, yet still flexible to conform to any surface profile. Initial testing indicates that flow rates exceed the original HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) Enkadrain products by an average of 130%.

All existing Enkadrain products will still be available through special order after August 1st. “The transition to converting all Enkadrain specifications to the new recycled content products will take some time, but we’re confident that saving the environment and saving money is important to our customers,” stated Dan Whitney, Regional Sales Manager for Colbond Building Products.

Enkadrain was the first subsurface drainage composite introduced to the building market more than 25 years ago. The patented tangled net structure relieves hydrostatic pressure from soils abutting below grade structures, and is a lightweight alternative to traditional sand and gravel drains. Enkadrain is used in residential and commercial buildings around the world and has recently been promoted in North America to the emerging green roof / roof garden market. Colbond is a major sponsor for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and is promoting the new line of drainage products through trade shows including GreenBuild International Conference & Expo, ASLA Expo, and the ICFA Insulating Concrete Form Association 2004 Fall Meeting & Expo.

The goal of the new partnership, which began July 1st 2004, is to provide the commercial, industrial, and residential construction industry with superior waterproofing and drainage options available from one source.
