New Gardner 'SpringSupreme' Disc Wheels Boost Productivity, Reduce Costs in Wet or Dry Spring Grinding Applications
South Beloit, IL, - Gardner Abrasives operation of Cinetic Landis Corp. announces the introduction of its new line of SpringSupreme(TM) disc grinding wheels. The new wheels feature an advanced resin-bonded formulation and unique design making them suitable for high-production grinding of a variety of spring types and materials in both wet and dry grinding applications.
The proprietary bond formulation of new SpringSupreme disc wheels incorporates induced porosity with internal lubricants. The wheels have a dramatic appearance due to the exceptionally large porosity with coarse grit. Gardner Abrasives engineers report that the new SpringSupreme disc wheels are exceptionally free-cutting, providing significant improvements in production rates (springs produced per hour) and reduction of wheel dressing in dry spring grinding applications. Unlike wheels manufactured with magnesite bonding material, Gardner's SpringSupreme disc wheels can also be used with coolant, making them ideal for use in grinding hot wound springs or any application needing large stock removal and low wheel wear. The new SpringSupreme wheels have a 3 to 4 week delivery from Gardner Abrasives compared with a typical 8-week delivery for magnesite-bonded grinding wheels.
In one recent application, a Gardner SpringSupreme disc wheel eliminated dressing between rough and finish passes in grinding 0.437" oil tempered wire for cold-wound wedge springs measuring 2.375" diameter x 11.75" long. Wheel wear was significantly reduced using the SpringSupreme wheel grinding at a rate of 300 springs per hour on a vertical spring grinder with extended spindle. The conventional magnesite grinding wheel previously used in the application required dressing of the wheel between the rough and finish passes.
In another application, a SpringSupreme disc wheel was able to nearly double to 90 springs per shift from the previous 50 springs in a 2-pass rough-and-finish grinding application on 40mm (1.57") diameter, proprietary hot-wound wire material for producing 130 lb. springs for a defense application. The 1,000mm x 100mm x 100mm disc wheel was run at 21.3 m/sec (4,193 SFPM); a synthetic coolant was used with the horizontal spindle spring grinder.
