New Stearns® Hazardous Location Brake Features NEMA 4/IP Moisture Protection

Milwaukee--August 5, 2002...A new Stearns solenoid-actuated disc brake introduced by Rexnord Corporation is the market's first Division 1 hazardous location brake with a NEMA 4/IP-55 enclosure for protection against moisture. The Stearns 87,300 Series brake is UL-listed (file E-14893) for hazardous location duty in Class I, Groups C and D, and Class II, Groups F and G. It also is CSA-certified (file LR-9584) for Class I Groups C and D, and Class II, Groups E, F and G.

The Stearns 87,300 Series hazardous location brake is available in seven different sizes, with torque ratings from 10 to 105 lb-ft (14 to 142 Nm). Both motor-mounted and foot-mounted versions are available, with NEMA 4, 7 and 9 enclosure protection. To exclude moisture, the cast-iron enclosure features O-ring seals between both the housing and endplate, as well as the endplate and motor. A lip seal protects the pull-type manual release, and a 90 degree explosion-proof elbow is standard.

Other key features include Class H coil insulation and a built-in thermal protector, designed to prevent brake surface temperature from exceeding specified limits for particular hazardous environment locations. As with other Stearns 87,000 Series brakes, the new brake is self adjusting to reduce maintenance requirements. This self-adjusting feature also makes the brake ideal for remote or inaccessible locations.

Hazardous-location brakes are intended primarily for non-cyclic or holding purposes but also maybe used for stopping light inertial loads. They are well-suited for applications in hazardous locations that involve liquids, gases or powder material.
