Appleton Develops Next Generation of UV Light-Resistant Direct Thermal Paper

LightSafeâ„¢ Technology maintains white appearance of label media for two years or longer

APPLETON, Wis., July 18, 2005-Appleton has introduced LightSafeâ„¢ 300, a direct thermal label stock that surpasses the non-yellowing characteristics of any other label printing method for warehouse and supply chain label applications.

Engineered and developed by Appleton, the patent-pending LightSafeâ„¢ Technology enables the LightSafeâ„¢ 300 direct thermal substrate (www.appletonideas.com/LightSafe) to maintain its original clean white appearance for two years or longer when exposed to high levels of industrial lighting.

The LightSafeâ„¢ Technology consists of a unique chemistry that maintains a pristine label appearance and high scanning reliability for linear and stacked bar code symbologies for two or more years. These properties make LightSafeâ„¢ 300 direct thermal paper the ideal label medium for handling the demanding requirements of long-term storage.

"Our test results prove with certainty that LightSafe 300 stays white longer than any direct thermal label paper on the market," Cove said. "This breakthrough ensures the long-term durability of direct thermal media. Now, end users in warehouse and supply chain applications can convert to direct thermal for their long-term label needs and take full advantage of its technological benefits and corresponding better overall value."

Appleton conducted its UV exposure tests of LightSafeâ„¢ using a QUV Accelerated Weathering Tester. The QUV tester is recognized as a standard in the paint industry to test the weathering characteristics of exterior paint and stains. It holds samples in a chamber that has the ability to adjust the conditions and time cycle to simulate various exposures.

LightSafeâ„¢ Technology is UV resistant, which is best described as resisting discoloration (yellowing) when left for extended periods of time in a well-lit warehouse with high levels of indirect sunlight and/or conventional warehouse lighting. UV resistance, as related to the LightSafeâ„¢ product, does not mean resistance to direct sunlight.

With the addition of LightSafeâ„¢ 300, Appleton provides a full range of direct thermal papers for producing labels capable of meeting the needs of any warehouse or supply chain application. Additional products in the line include:

-- 675-Wavex® - for applications that demand pristine label appearance for up to eight months; ideal for products that require mid-range warehouse storage.

-- Résiste™ 900 - maintains a pristine label appearance for up to three months; ideal for quick-inventory-turn products where conditions are relatively dirty.

-- Résiste® 190 - maintains a pristine label appearance for up to four months; ideal for cross-docking and products requiring quick inventory turns.

Compared to thermal transfer, direct thermal is a simpler medium to use and more cost-effective because it only involves one consumable‹label stock, so there is less work (fewer on-floor change-outs cut downtime and increase productivity), as well as less ordering and inventory (which saves time and reduces storage costs). Direct thermal labels also eliminate ribbon hassles like wrinkling, smudging, misalignment, imaging troubles and security issues. Plus, direct thermal does not have electrostatic discharge problems like thermal transfer, which is a growing concern as RFID tags become more common. Direct thermal is easier to deploy because it does not require matching the ribbon with the paper and the printer, like thermal transfer requires. And, switching to direct thermal is easy because almost all thermal transfer printers are manufactured to run direct thermal.
