June 8, 2004 - Model LTC2601 integrates voltage output 16-Bit DAC in 10-pin DFN package. It allows multiple DACs to be controlled with 3 wires using daisy-chainable SPI serial interface. Operating with voltages from 2.5-5.5 V, unit's DAC output can directly drive capacitive loads to 1,000 pF or current loads to 15 mA. Asynchronous update pin enables DAC update to be synchronized to hardware signal as well as simultaneous updates of multiple DACs in system.

16-Bit DAC Family Offers Up to 8 DAC's in Tiny Package

MILPITAS, CA - June 2, 2004 - A new 3mm x 3mm 16-Bit DAC from Linear Technology Corporation provides the industry's smallest footprint while integrating more functions and improving DC performance over competitive products. The LTC2601 reduces the size and improves the performance of compact portable products by integrating a high-performance, voltage output 16-Bit DAC in a 3mm x 3mm 10-pin DFN package. The LTC2601 DAC is ideal for space-constrained applications, optimizing board layout. The LTC2601 allows multiple DACs to be controlled with 3 wires using a daisy-chainable SPI serial interface. The device's guaranteed monotonic performance is ideal for digital calibration, trim/adjust and level setting applications in a wide variety of products.

The LTC2601's output buffer provides excellent drive capability over its entire 2.5V to 5.5V supply voltage range. The DAC output can directly drive capacitive loads up to 1000pF or current loads up to 15mA and maintains good linearity to within millivolts of both supply rails. The low output offset (9mV max) provides a zero-scale voltage closer to 0V than competitive devices. The LTC2601's low noise reduces the need for output filtering and its 0.1 to 10Hz noise (15uVp-p) is much lower than competitive devices. The LTC2601's low 250uA supply current and 1uA maximum shutdown current are ideal for battery-powered applications.

The LTC2601's asynchronous update pin allows the DAC update to be synchronized to a hardware signal and also allows simultaneous updates of multiple DACs in a system. A power-on reset clears the LTC2601 to zero-scale on power up. The LTC2601 provides an asynchronous clear pin, which is required in many servo and control applications.

The LTC2601 is one device in a family of compact DACs. The LTC2611 and LTC2621 are pin-compatible 14-bit and 12-bit DACs, which allow multiple price/performance options for one design. For applications requiring multiple DACs in one package, the family includes octal, quad and dual DACs that provide the same unmatched combination of superior performance and the smallest available footprints.

Pricing starts at $2.70 each for the LTC2601 in 1,000-piece quantities.
