September 5, 2008 - Designed to replace locomotive's exhaust silencer, Harco Eliminator sits directly above engine and is not visible from exterior of locomotive. Unit is unaffected by vibration and prevents clogging, which would hinder effectiveness in reducing particulate matter. Measuring 133 x 74 x 77 cm, Eliminator DOC is designed for retrofit applications on locomotives that are out in field. It is not customized for each application, but can be adjusted to fit each engine.

Harco Catalysts Ride the Rails

Harco Manufacturing Co., a Newberg, Oregon, U.S.A.-based manufacturer of premium engine exhaust silencers and emission control products recently developed, produced and began selling its diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) package for the locomotive market.

The product has been developed in partnership with Motive Power Inc., a subsidiary of Wabtec Corp. for diesel engine locomotives. The Harco-designed package, called the Harco Eliminator, takes the place of the locomotive's exhaust silencer and sits directly above the engine. In this configuration the Eliminator DOC is not visible from the exterior of the locomotive. The dimensions of the unit are 133 cm long, 74 cm
wide and 77 cm high.

For this product, Harco worked to overcome challenges that are standard for rail applications. Under-hood space considerations needed to be addressed.

In addition, the unit needed to be robust enough so as not to be affected by vibration. Also, it needed to be designed in a manner so as to prevent clogging, which would hinder the effectiveness of the catalyst in reducing particulate mater.

Initial testing for the Harco Eliminator was done on an EMD 16-645 F3B engine using procedures as outlined in 40 CFR Part 92 Emission Standards for Locomotives and Locomotive Engines.

According to Harco, results of the testing showed that hydrocarbons were reduced an average of 37% on line haul and 48% on the switcher duty cycle applications. In addition, carbon monoxide was said to be reduced by 38% in line haul and 32% in switcher duty cycle applications. Further, Harco reported that particulate matter was
reduced by 25% in line haul and 22% in switcher duty cycle applications.

The Eliminator DOC is designed for retrofit applications on locomotives that are currently out in the field. According to Harco, the Eliminator DOCs are not customized for each application. However, some adjustments must be made to them to fit each engine depending on if it is a General Electric or Electro-Motive Diesel. Harco handles the engineering of this configuring process, in house, according to each engine being retrofitted.

Harco Manufacturing has completed an order for 15 locomotives for Motive Power and Los Angeles, California's MetroLink Rail line. Harco is currently working on a follow-up order for 26 locomotives that operate on the Maryland M.A.R.C rail line. These locomotives also use the EMD 16-645 F3B diesel engine.
