Isilon Sets Standard for Scale Out File Storage with Release of Fifth Generation Clustered Storage Systems

New OneFS 5.0 Operating System Software Transforms Enterprise File-Based Data Storage with Unmatched Performance, Scale and Value;

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Turner Studios and Orange Among Enterprise Customers Using Isilon Clustered Storage To Power Full Spectrum of File-Based Data Applications

SEATTLE, Sept. 15 -- Isilon(R) Systems (NASDAQ:ISLN), the leader in clustered storage, today announced the release of its fifth generation clustered storage systems, delivering unmatched levels of performance, scalability and value to power a broadening range of file- based applications and workflows in the enterprise. With the release of its OneFS(R) 5.0 operating system software, Isilon's X-Series clustered storage systems set the standard for scale out file storage, delivering up to 20 Gigabytes per second of performance and 2.3 Petabytes of capacity in a single file system and single volume. Isilon also announced today the release of its new performance acceleration product, Accelerator-x (see separate press release), delivering 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) connectivity for next- generation enterprise networking.

Underscoring the necessity for next-generation, scale out file storage, a June 2008 report from IDC, entitled "Got Files? The Expanding Options For File Level Storage," estimates that 2008 is an inflection point where disk capacities shipped will be home to more file-level data than block-level data and by 2011, 75 percent of disk storage systems capacity will be shipped to support some sort of file-level data.

"The continued expansion in file-based information will have a dramatic impact on enterprises across a wide range of industries over the next five years," said Brad Nisbet, Research Manager, IDC Storage Systems. "The storage and management of file-based information will become the primary task for many administrators in enterprise data centers, and this will have a significant impact on how organizations assess storage solutions in terms of system performance, scalability, and operational efficiency."

"As massive stores of file-based data proliferate the enterprise, businesses are realizing that traditional, scale up SAN and NAS storage architectures are no longer an acceptable long-term strategy," said Sujal Patel, CEO, Isilon Systems. "With the release of Isilon's fifth generation clustered storage systems, we are setting the standard for scale out file storage; enabling enterprises to achieve new levels of innovation and business agility while dramatically reducing the costs and complexity of traditional storage infrastructure."

"Our research is showing an increased user interest in clustered storage in scale out architectures as enterprises look to address storage infrastructure complexity, cost and performance issues," said Pushan Rinnen, Research Director, Gartner. "As file-based data continues to grow at a significant rate, clustered storage solutions should be on the shortlist for consideration to ensure maximum return on investment."

In conjunction with the release of its next-generation clustered storage systems, Isilon today announced that the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (see separate press release), Turner Studios (see separate press release) and Orange are among hundreds of enterprise customers deploying its products to serve a broadening range of file-based applications and workflows.

"Applications of next-generation DNA sequencing at the Broad Institute and elsewhere require an unprecedented amount of data to be stored and managed in a high-performance research and bioinformatics pipeline," said Matthew Trunnell, Manager of Research Computing at the Broad Institute. "With Isilon IQ, we've been able to grow a single file system to nearly a Petabyte in less than a year, while still maintaining the data throughput necessary to power our workflow and advance our research."

With the release of its fifth generation clustered storage systems, Isilon is ushering in the following key benefits:

o Performance -- Leveraging Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) technology introduced with the release of the new OneFS 5.0 operating system software, Isilon's clustered storage systems deliver up to 20 Gigabytes per second of performance in a single file system and single volume, achieving double the performance of its previous generation of clustered storage systems. Isilon customers with active OneFS software support subscriptions can upgrade to OneFS 5.0 at no cost, enabling a 2X performance gain on their Isilon IQ X- Series storage systems.

o Scalability -- With the release of its OneFS 5.0 operating system software, Isilon's clustered storage systems deliver modular, "pay as you grow" scaling of capacity up to 2.3 Petabytes in a single file system and single volume, creating a single, shared pool of storage to meet the file- based data requirements of next-generation enterprise data centers.

o ROI -- Isilon's clustered storage systems deliver significant value for storing and managing the growth of file-based data. Isilon recently released the results of a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Isilon which concluded that, on average, the interviewed Isilon customers achieved a risk-adjusted ROI of 125 percent and a payback period within five months. The Forrester Total Economic Impact (TEI) study of Isilon's clustered storage systems can be accessed at http://www.isilon.com/.

Powered by OneFS, Isilon IQ X-Series delivers the industry's first single file system that unifies and provides instant and ubiquitous access to the rapidly growing stores of file-based data, setting the standard for scale out file storage. OneFS is a unified operating system software layer that powers all of Isilon's award-winning IQ family of clustered storage systems including the Isilon IQ 1920, 3000, 6000, 9000, 12000, Accelerator-x, and EX 6000, 9000 and 12000. Isilon also provides a robust suite of software applications including SnapshotIQ(R), SmartConnect(TM), SmartQuotas(TM), and SyncIQ(R) that leverage OneFS and clustered storage, providing the highest levels of data protection and automated data management.
