NEC Strengthens its Lineup of Energy Conserving Data Center Servers

Tokyo - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the launch of sales for the latest model of its Express5800 Server Series, the Express5800/E110b-M, whose power consumption and size have been significantly reduced.

The Express5800/E110b-M conserves as much as 70% more electricity and requires notably less space than previous models (*1) thanks to the "Intel(R) Atom(TM) processor N450" (*2) and NEC's newly developed power sharing unit, the "EcoPower Gateway."

As cloud computing continues to advance, it becomes increasingly important to reduce power consumption and improve the efficiency of data center servers.

The Express5800/E110b-M server is ideal for hosting (server rental) businesses that are seeking to reduce both power and space consumption.

The Express5800/E110b-M server features the following:
1) As much as a 70% reduction in electricity consumption
  • The low power Intel(R) Atom(TM) processor N450 enables a significant reduction in power consumption.
  • The latest EcoPower Gateway unit allows power to be shared across as many as 80 servers. The EcoPower Gateway supports a maximum of four 1U components certified with 80 PLUS(R) Gold (*3) conversion efficiency of 92% and standard support for redundant configuration. Power loss is suppressed by sharing electricity between several servers, thereby reducing electricity consumption by approximately 10% when compared to electricity distribution to each individual server.
    2) Superior rack capacity efficiency
  • High-density packaging cultivated through blade server development enabled a 70% size reduction when compared to previous models. A 3U enclosure can support as many as 20 servers. One rack can accommodate as many as 240 servers.
  • The floor load capacity for conventional data centers is 500 kg/m2. The Express5800/E110b-M's 1U racks can double a data center's capacity (*4) and enable the support of up to 160 servers.
  • The Express5800/E110b-M operates successfully in high temperature (40 degrees Celsius) environments, approximately 5 degrees Celsius warmer than conventional servers' normal operating environment (35 degrees Celsius), which helps reduce data center air conditioning costs.
    3) Efficient operations management
  • The EXPRESSSCOPE Engine 2 is a standard feature of the Express5800/E110b-M, and enables easy server observation and control from remote locations, including data center management functions that range from CPU memory and fan observation to power-supply control. Moreover, these functions can be carried out regardless of the kind of operating system (OS) or power-supply (ON/OFF).

Looking forward, NEC will continue to reinforce its Express5800 Series by aiming to realize next generation IT infrastructure that "flexibly," "securely" and "comfortably" supports the company's vision for next generation cloud computing IT platforms, "REAL IT PLATFORM G2."

NEC will exhibit the Express5800/E110b-M at Interop Tokyo 2010, June 7-11 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan (http://www.interop.jp/).
