SHIRLEY, N.Y. -- Modular Devices, Inc. (MDI) announces the availability of a compact new DC/DC converter that meets MIL-STD-461 D, E and F without any need for external EMI filtering. Series 3090 converters enable more efficient compliance with the latest Electromagnetic Interference Compatibility (EMC) requirements for aerospace, defense, and civil aviation airborne electronics.

"The small size and high compatibility of the 3090 series make it a valuable solution to engineering design challenges as the demand for quieter DC/DC converters becomes more prevalent," states MDI president Steven E. Summer. "Moreover, the 3090 design allows companies to stock a single part for different applications."

Series 3090 5-watt DC/DC converters operate from nominal 28 VDC power sources. Models are available with single or dual outputs, and are packaged in a hermetic case that is only 1.08 inches square by 0.380 inches. The 3090 design is sufficiently robust to operate through MIL-STD-704A 80V/100mS power line transients.

DC/DC converters generate EMI. When the package is small, close proximity can present a formidable challenge that is overcome by the unique 3090 design. EMI filters also have areas of resonance that can amplify unwanted AC components superimposed on the DC input. Resistance to this effect is tested by MIL-STD-461 conducted susceptibility tests. Simple LC EMI filters often have a large resonance that can cause unwanted AC ripple on the output. However, the Model 3090 has a highly damped EMI filter design, giving superior performance in rejection of conducted susceptibility (MIL-STD-461 revisions D, E, and F method CS101 and CS102) inputs.

MDI is currently developing a 30-watt series of DC/DC converters with built-in EMI filters for release later this year.
